Michigan Greens Nominate for Governor, US Senator and other offices

On August 5-6, the Michigan Green Party, which is ballot-qualified, nominated its candidates. Doug Campbell was nominated for Governor, and David Sole for U.S. Senator.

There are twelve U.S. Senate races this year that are considered somewhat competitive. Of those, Greens have nominated a candidate in Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington. They have not done so in Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio, and Rhode Island.

Although the Green Party that is on the ballot in Virginia is not affiliated with the national Green Party, it is the only Green Party that is on the Virginia ballot this year.

Democrats are furious with the Green Party for running someone for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, but seem to have nothing to say about the Greens running in six other close Senate races.

Through its sordid corporate history and 100 years of revolving-door relationships with government, Bechtel illustrates the connections between profiteering and war, between nuclear power and nuclear weapons proliferation, between “free trade” and the exploitation of indigenous peoples, and between corporate power-brokers and decision-makers at the highest levels of government.

    * Citizens For A Better Veterans Home, member Tish Firmiss ran up the I-15 hill to pick up cofounders Don Lake and John Coffey for the grand Summer 2006
Western USA Grande Toure De Politics and Political Corruption Expose. Lake was able to continue to Vegas (looking for Bruce Westcott’s place) and then to Bosie (Idaho) to meet with National Lae Party/ United Party candidate for Independent (ballot access, serious run for Congress in Idaho’s First CD).on Sunday August 6th.

Andy Hedden-Nicely and Tish and Lake joined Veterans For Peace and other local groups at the city’s Veterans Park. The local weekly is supposed to run print and photos. The Idaho Statesman, formerly on a ‘major party only’ kick, might reprint a press release.

It is official, Hedden-Nicely has officially endorsed Los Angeles Unified teacher and independent candidate for California governor, Eric ‘Moose” Mahoney and Lake was able to give Mahoney’s endorsement to Hedden-Nicely.

http://www.mahoneyforcalifornia.com is already endorsed by micro party http://www.modparty.com (Moderate Party) and Lake has previously interceded for Andy. Moose Mahoney came down to visit Lake and Firmiss in San Diego and has driven and walked north on the ‘Royal Road’ and ‘El Camino Real’ and ‘Old Spanish Trail’. Lake and Firmiss plan on doing the reverse back down to Sandy Ego……..

  2. I would disagree with your assessment that “Democrats are furious with the Green Party for running someone for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.” Democrats in Pennsylvania are not furious that the Green Party is running a candidate. They are furious because Rick Santorum and his Republican supporters have contributed $60,000 and at least six paid staffers to the effort. The Republicans think they can get a tactical advantage by running Carl Romanelli (G-PA). Romanelli and the Green party would likely have not been successful in getting on the ballot on their own. This is what makes the Democrats upset. They have no problem competing on against the Green. They have a problem competing against the Republican / Green Alliance of Cynicism.

The Republican / Green Alliance of Cynicism is not without its predecessors. In 1996 Alan Cranston (D-CA) won re-election in California in part by spending some of his campaign fund running commercials supporting the candidacy of conservative Ed Vallen (American Independent – CA). Cranston won re-election with 49% of the vote. He defeated Republican nominee Ed Zschau (R-CA) by 104,868 votes. Vallen, who would not have had any television or radio commercials if it had not been for Cranston, picked up 109,856 votes.

  3. If the Democrats “have no problem competing against the Green,” then why didn’t they work to repeal Pennsylvania’s convoluted minor-party ballot access barrier or at least to mitigate this year’s unusually high signature requirement?

The latter became an obvious problem when no statewide judge retired or died before the 2005 municipal election. That means they had a year to do something.

The Dems are scared s***less of Romanelli, _not_ because of the conventional, ill-conceived non-wisdom that Greens always “steal” votes from Democrats (as if they have no impact until the day of the election itself), but because in this particular election, the Dems have a candidate who is afraid to debate the issues and is running solely on an “anybody but Santorum” platform.

  4. The Democratic Party would benefit if they supported reforms to the electoral system such as instant runoff voting which would require a candidate to receive 50% plus one vote to be elected and allow this to happen by having voters rank the candidates in order of preference, thus allowing the candidate at the bottom of the list to be removed and the second choice votes distributed until a candidate had the required number of votes. …and equal public funding of campaigns which would have prevented the Republicans from giving money to the Greens. …and proportional representation so that representatives can form their coalitions around issues after the election rather than before. …etc.

  5. The Green Party is NOT running a candidate for U.S. Senate in Virginia. Please remove that reference. The candidate to whom you are referring was nominated by a splinter group that calls itself the “Independent Greens.” This group was founded by a person who was ejected from the D.C. Statehood Green Party and was about to be ejected from the Virginia Green Party. The IG’s have no coherent platform that is consistent with the Green Party’s Ten Key Values and they are not affiliated with the FEC-recognized Green Party of the United States. Their unfortunate usage of the word “Green” in their name causes much confusion in Virginia.

The Green Party of Virginia, which is the officially recognized Green Party affiliate in Virginia, has no candidate for U.S. Senate this year. The GPVA website is http://www.vagreenparty.org, at which this information may be verified.
