Gallup Poll on Republican Presidential Contest

As noted in an April 8 post, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, MSNBC, and The Politico, are jointly sponsoring a debate on May 3 among nine Republican candidates for president. On April 10, Gallup/USA Today released a poll, showing these results for those nine invited candidates: Rudy Giuliani 38%, John McCain 16%, Mitt Romney 6%, Tommy Thompson 2%, Ron Paul 2%, Mike Huckabee 1%, Sam Brownback 1%, Duncan Hunter 1%, Jim Gilmore 0%. Also, 25% chose candidates who have not announced and 8% had no preference. It is significant that the sponsors of this major debate are willing to invite candidates who are only at 1% or less. Obviously, standards are very different for general election presidential debates; the Commission on Presidential Debates excludes those who poll under 15% in those debates.

Gallup Poll on Republican Presidential Contest — No Comments

  1. Congressman Ron Paul, the leading voice in today’s freedom movement, is running for President of the United States. Dr Paul represents our best opportunity to infuse the 2008 presidential elections with a conversation on personal freedom. But he can’t succeed without the help of you and me! I’m putting my money where my mouth is by pledging a paltry 100 bucks to help his campaign, and I urge you to do the same.

Let’s send a message to Washington and the media that this man and his message will not be ignored!

  2. No Strings Attatched
It’s time for a change. It’s time for a Dr. to treat the ills of our country with remedy that treats the illness at the root, instead of Band-Aid’s on the symptoms. Dr. Paul has the remedy, which is summarized in one word… FREEDOM. But we should add Liberty as well. The first of these freedoms to get restored to fix the other freedoms, is Monetary Freedom. Taking away the strings of the Federal Reserve Corporation that have been strangling each and every one of us for decades. Further, Dr Paul is not swayed or purchased by party affiliation or special interest lobby dollars. He votes according to the U.S. Constitution and that’s GOOD. That is what made this the GOOD OLE US of A. No frills, no whistles, No Strings Attached… From just an kid growing up in Pittsburgh with a paper route, Today,Ron Paul is Americas BraveHeart. America, Lets get join this Man, to Restore our GREAT Republic! Ron Paul is Americas BraveHeart!

  3. A poll nearly 19 months before the election and nearly nine months before the first nominating event gives the media something to talk about, but it’s otherwise not worth much.

Remember President George Romney, President Edmund Muskie, President Nelson Rockefeller…?

  4. The objective of all liberty loving Americans should be to contribute money to Dr. Paul’s noble Presidential campaign. If we can move Ron Paul’s number up by 1% each month from now to next February, he will be a contender.

Dr. Paul is very viable to those who know of him and understand his positions. Our job is to get his name & great work out to the tens of millions of Republicans or Independents, who are currently unfamiliar with his great principled career in the House, and urge those folks to promote Dr. Paul as their candidate. We’ve got only 9 months to do so. Just enough time to have a baby, as Dr. Paul might say (having delivered over 4,000 babies himself.).

    Make that contribution today!

  5. I would not bet on giuliani doing well in Iowa . When Iowans learn about the real giuliani his numbers will drop. I think he knows this and that is why he hasnt agreed to show up for the
    Iowa straw poll !

  6. AS RON PAUL’S ISSUES BECOME KNOW TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC AND THEY MOST ASSURIDLY WILL, HE WILL TAKE THE LEAD AS THE ONLY TRUE PRESIDENTIAL CONSERVATIVE SINCE CALVIN COOLIDGE…THIS IS MY PROPHECY…AMEN!

  7. Besides money contribution what is even better to contribute is with your time and direct resources like putting up signs, posters and speaking to people yourself.

Spread the word like wild-fire the old fashion way from mouth to mouth!

  8. I will be voting for Ron Paul in “08”. This man is morally and ethically who America needs representing us.

  9. Please post a schedule of upcoming events so those of us on the internet can get out in front and help your campaign.

  10. First canidate worth voting for in 50 years. Please more audio speeches or video. I have 50 from yesterday that shall be out today. I would like to put neocon speech onw public access in Dayton, Ohio and surrounding area, but I don’t know how to get a copy.

  11. Ron Paul is one of the only candidates that is fully qualified to address our nation’s needs. He is the only one that is capable of addressing the economic needs, such as the Federal Reserve. He is also a leader in the fight against the North American Union, which is the biggest teft of our American Sovereignty. Ron Paul will restore this country’s freedoms.

  12. If you’re not familiar with Ron Paul, it’s hard to believe he’s for real. He eloquently shoots down every false argument leveled by both neocons and socialist types. I’ll be surprised if the media and other candidates let him speak. This needs to be countered by grassroots support. Otherwise we’ll end up once again with the lousy government we deserve for being apathetic.

  13. There is absolutely no debate on this issue. There is no Republican able to add any Constitutional basis for anything that the government may do, EXCEPT CONGRESSMAN RON PAUL. Discussion solved!

  15. Read Dr. Paul’s new book “A Foreign Policy of Freedom” His message has been consistent for over 31 years! His message is the same one-on-one or to a large group. He truly is the best hope we have to steer us through the next several years threatened with economic collapse and loss of liberties!

  16. The moral and constitutional obligations of our representatives in Washington are to protect our liberty, not coddle the world, precipitating no-win wars, while bringing bankruptcy and economic turmoil to our people.

    ~Ron Paul

    #ronpaul @ irc.freenode.net

  17. Love Dr. Paul. First candidate I have ever supported with my time and money. He is the candidate that everyone says they long for, but it will take some convincing since he’s not promising handouts, but rather our very country.

  18. For Dr. Paul,

We have to work harder and smarter to get Dr. Paul along far enough to get in the real debates later. We must write letters, buy billboards, send out bumper stickers, pins, and talk to everyone we meet. We must call talk radio stations and insist they cover him. He truly stands above the whole pack in character and dedication to freedom. He is by far the most Jeffersonian of the whole bunch. I’ve donated the maximum and I am working every day for his campaign. Win or lose, I’ve never felt better.

We must dedicate ourselves and work tirelessly. He is worth every sacrifice.

  19. I am encouraged to see Ron Paul moving up in the polls. I have donated the maximum and am wearing my Ron Paul for President button everyday. He is America’s best hope for peace, prosperity and liberty. His dedicated belief in the US Constitution make him a national treasure in Congress, he would be our national hero as President.

  20. Does anyone know whether or not Congressman Paul agrees with the Libertarian Party’s platform on the so-called “victimless crimes”? (Gambling, prostitution, ect.) I know of many conservatives who would support him for president except they don’t know if or how much he continues to support the Libertarian platform.

  21. “The moral and constitutional obligations of our representatives in Washington are to protect our liberty, not coddle the world, precipitating no-win wars, while bringing bankruptcy and economic turmoil to our people. ~Ron Paul”

While our soldiers die in the line of duty without question in order to uphold the constitution, follow the orders of the leaders over them and to defend our country sometimes paying the ultimate sacrifice with their lives, I feel a civilians duty is just as important or more important to keep our politicians inline. Every citizen has a duty to elect politicians that are capable of defending the constitution and not sending our boys to war for poor reasons.

  22. Ron Paul is the first candidate that I have ever donated $100 to and I urge you to do the same.

    Donate today!

  23. Michael,
I would guess that Ron Paul would support the traditional libertarian view on those issues. But I would ask your friends to consider the following:
    1) Ron Paul will tell you how he stands on not change his mind later, until many of his opponents. He will not change his answer depending on his audience.
    2) These are small issues and in all certainty will not be affect policy or law.
    3) Any candidate will have stances that you do not agree with. You should go with the candidate who you think is best. I personally disagree with his views on the gold standard. I consider myself a monetarist. But I’m still giving Dr. Paul my full support.

I hope your friends join his cause.

  24. For 50 years I’ve never cared for politics but I just donated to Ron Paul’s campaign (the first political contribution of my life), I’m telling everyone I know about him, and I am taking two days off work this week to drive 7 hours to hear him speak. For those of you who have not heard his unique brand of honest, simple and intelligent common sense, please check out his videos on Yahoo, Google and YouTube.

  25. Ron Paul is speaking the truth from one side and Dennis Kucinich is doing the same from the other. Why don’t they run together in the spirit of the early republic?

  26. While every other candidate blinds us with “non-issues” and rhetoric, Congressman
Paul’s message has resounding clarity and focused insight to the real problems facing America today. Most importantly I and many others believe that if given the
chance he could deliver our Executive Branch out from the horrible, misguided, corrupt debacle that we currently have in place.

  27. “Does anyone know whether or not Congressman Paul agrees with the Libertarian Party’s platform on the so-called “victimless crimes”? (Gambling, prostitution, ect.) I know of many conservatives who would support him for president except they don’t know if or how much he continues to support the Libertarian platform.”

Ron Paul is still a Life Member of the Libertarian Party. He has never disavowed his Libertarian Party membership in any way and he in fact still speaks at Libertarian Party meetings from time to time.

Ron oppposes victimless crimes, so therefore he believes that gambling and prostitution should be legal. It’s not that he advocates that people should engage in these activities, he just doesn’t believe that people should go to jail for them.

However, one needs to keep in mind that Ron holds a federal office (Congressman) and that he’s running for another federal office (President) and that Ron believes that the federal government should not be involved in these issues as they should be left to these states or to the people.

Ron is against abortion but he believes that this is an issue that should be handled at the state level as well. Abortion is not a definitional libertarian issue as one can still be regaurded as a libertarian on either side of the abortion debate.

  28. If you’ve taken the time to review the budge Congress just passed, you would find that 2/3’s of America’s budget is earmarked for mandatory spending. MANDATORY, required to keep afloat our sinking social security, medicare and entitlements. I’m not against helping those who need it, but wouldn’t we all be in a better position to help if we were allowed to keep more of our money?

Consider this, and if it doesn’t make you downright feel completely betrayed then nothing ever will, currently most Americans work for the government for nearly HALF of the year. Now let me ask you something, do you REALLY believe the government does a better job of spending your money and deciding who to give it to than you would?

    Ron Paul in 2008!

  29. RON IS THE ONLY CONGRESSMAN I KNOW WHO TELLS IT LIKE IT IS.EXAMPLE MONETARY POLICY CAUSES INFLATION AND HIGHER PRICES WHICH HURTS THE POOR THE MOST AND SUCKS ALL THE MONEY OUT OF THE MIDDLE CLASS.THE RICH GET RICHER.TIME FOR SOUND MONEY POLICY.IF THE PEOPLE CAN GET THE INFORMATION MOST PEOPLE WILL SAY WHERE HAS RON PAUL BEEN ALL MY LIFE I LIKE THIS CONGRESSMAN FROM TEXAS.FOR DONATIONS AS LITTLE AS TEN DOLLARS YOU CAN GET INFORMATION SENT TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS. GO TO RONPAUL2008.COM GO RON GO

  30. Stan says, “By the looks of the responses, id say the polling numbers are not accurate to how many people support Ron Paul :)”

Sadly, they are most likely accurate. Most people don’t know about Ron Paul, YET. But rest assured, THE TRUTH IS A VIRUS. Continue to educate people, the word WILL get out. They can only ignore him for so long, so prepare yourself for when they choose to laugh or fight him.

    I refer everyone I can to: http://www.house.gov/paul/legis_tst.htm
And tell them to read Ron Pauls columns. This is the only candidate telling it like it is. If we don’t get him elected, we will deserve what we get.

    Get the word out.

  31. Ron Paul is the first candidate than we can truly believe in since Reagan. Let’s not miss this chance to change history.

  32. I believe in the Constitution and our rights as citizens in this great country. I’m a mormon and there’s a mormon in the running; however, I have to say that the only candidate whose vow will mean anything when he places his hand over his heart and promises to uphold and protect the constitution is Ron Paul.

Ron Paul needs our support, financial and otherwise. Please support the only candidate that is not beholden to the political elites.

  33. Ron Paul is the only candidate that supports the Constitution of the United States of America. Ron Paul is the only candidate that supports putting our money system back into the hands of our government instead of the private cartel of international bankers that own the Federal Reserve.

Ron Paul is the only candidate that the media, which is now owned by five mega corporations, is opposed to. He is the only candidate they either ignore or disparage because he is the only candidate they see as a threat to their control of what the public sees and believes.

Ron Paul, if elected president, will not make big changes because it has taken us years to get into the fix we are in and, as he has stated, you cannot just dismantle things like Social Security and the Federal Reserve without cause major problems. However, he is for small changes and one change would be to allow gold and silver to become money and to compete with Federal Reserve notes. For example, as money there would be no sales tax and if you bought a gold coin for $500 Federal Reserve Notes and later exchanged it for $1000, you would not pay a tax on the so called profit. If you don’t trust the Federal Reserve to protect the value of your money, you could go to the bank and open a gold account. As Ron Paul stated, that would force the Federal Reserve to act more responsible. Otherwise, most people would switch to a gold and/or silver account.

For this reason alone, Ron Paul has my support. In the last 15 years, the purchasing power of the money I saved all my life for my retirement has lost half its value.

  34. Seriously, if we want to keep our Republic we need Ron Paul as our President. If you want to keep America on the path of, deficit spending, inflation, foreign intervention in countries that most Americans can’t even find on a map, and not actually following the Bill of Rights because, “the world has changed since 9/11,” then
vote for Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, or any of the other Top Runners for the GOP. It is either Republic or Empire, we can’t have both.

  35. Ron Paul is the only one worth voting for. Giuliani ‘Gungrab’ is so corrupt it is unreal. McCain ‘Mr Amnesty’ is should be running as a Democrap. I think these polls are rigged. EVERYONE I have talked to in my area is for Ron Paul.

  36. Ron Paul is the only Republican I can bring myself to vote for. He’s also the only man in the entire field who can bring non-voters to the polls in droves. Rudy McRomney brings nothing new, and would be destined to lose to Hillary. Only Ron Paul can put Hillary on the defensive about the war, government corruption, and spending. Only Ron Paul can keep the right from bolting without alienating the center. It’s time for the neocons to go.

  37. Guliani would finish what Bush has started further impose on our civil liberites. Guliani is the poor’s and middle classes worst nightmare.

When Rudy was mayor he gave the cops and fireman a zero percent raise for 4 years in a row! and to top it all off he goes and gives himself a raise.

Rudy cracked down on NYC’s homeless and foreced them off the streets

Even though he’s a Yankee fan hes a bad man

    Vote Ron Paul!

  38. Ron Pauls word is worth the weight in gold. He is our best presidential candidate . I have been a democrat since I began voting , and I am more than happy to be a Republican to vote for Ron Paul. He stands for what we want in which life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. He will bring back our republic and give us our rights.

  40. I decided to focus on making copies of Aaron Russo’s documentary, FREEDOM TO FASCISM and make those copies available to all for a nominal fee.

It is a ministry of love of Country and requires much time and effort. Their is no profit in the project and all funds pay for the materials. Duplicators, printers, ink, DVD blanks, sleeves and mailing are covered by the one dollar price.

Please, help spread the word with DVS’s to friends, neighbors and all you meet. Time is short and we may only have one more chance at electing a true statesman. The Republic may already be lost but, man’s fight for freedom is never lost.

  41. Sorry about the typos. It is late and I have my hands full, most of the time, burning and printing on DVD’s. Talk about multi-tasking. It is like an assembly line here. Any volunteers?

    Ron

  42. Can anyone get him on the Steve Dace(sp) radio show
on WHO Des Moines. Has my Iowa vote!

  43. Dr. Paul’s candidacy is bring hope to so many of us. Please consider contributing on a regular basis, even if you can’t afford much. We must once again purchase our liberty at great cost.

  44. Ron Paul is by far the only candidate worthy of support.
Forget about party lines! Our country is made up of honest AMERICANS who love and respect freedom. Ron is a genuine American patriot. God speed Mr.Paul, we are behind you one hundred percent!!Thank you

  45. I am very excited to hear that Ron Paul is running for President. We need someone to restore the ideals of our Founding Fathers of the Constitution.
Take it from me – a resident of Maryland where the tax and spend politicians have pushed us as close as you can be to Socialism (just a slower growing form of Communism), without actually declaring it a Socialist State. We are known locally as the “Nanny State” where only the Government really knows what’s best for the individual. We are spreading the word about Ron Paul as it is a message of hope!

  46. Ron Paul will work to have us make a gradual exit from Iraq and will work to balance the budget.

He has more integrity than all the other candidates combined.

He would make a fantastic president!

  47. Several people talking about Ron Paul.

Is that the Ron Paul who told eveybody he was a republican, but is actually a libertarian?
Does that make him a liar?

You say he’s a real republican?
    Read his web site.

    Legalize Drugs?
    That’s a republican?
How many republicans want to legalize drugs?
Sounds like a Jane Fonda, Barbara Streisand republican to me…

  48. You people are delusional if you think Ron Paul is getting nominated to anything higher than dog catcher.

Get a clue and a life.

  49. Did somebody say Ron Paul? I see somebody wrote that we people are delusional if we think Ron Paul is getting nominated for anything higher than a dog catcher….lol…I got a good chuckle..I’m voting for him if given the opportunity. He is the “ONLY” candidate I see concerned with personal liberties and our constitution. I see our president who swore to uphold and defend the constitution and all he has done is step on it and trash it. So call me delusional I don’t care but I’m voting for Ron Paul..Case closed

  50. Let’s take back the constitution, the Bill of Rights — let’s get rid of the Patriot Act, Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003, and let’s restore the 1st, 2nd, and 4th amendments. Ron Paul 2008.

  51. FRED ’08

Good guy, realistic views on immigration and Iraq among other things, sticks to his guns, and can get the job done.
