Michael Lind Essay at Salon Boosts Proportional Representation but Feels U.S. is Unlikely to Switch

Michael Lind has this essay at Salon. He suggests that proportional representation would be good for the United States, but then concludes that a nation that still hasn’t switched wholly to the metric system is unlikely to switch to proportional representation either.

The essay also says that the U.S. needs more than new ideas; it needs a whole new social movement, embodying ideas that have not yet crystallized.

  1. Jesus! This guy doesn’t know the difference between IRV and PR and gets paid to write an article about election systems for Salon. Meanwhile I’m unemployed.

  2. Minority rule gerrymanders since at least the formation of the Brit House of Commons in the 1200s — 700 plus years of ANTI-Democracy regimes = party hack robot OLIGARCHS in control — tending always towards MONARCHY — big cheese Prezs, Guvs, Mayors, etc.

New Zealand (ex Brit regime) switched from standard gerrymanders to about 95 percent accurate P.R. in the early 1990s — about 4 P.R. elections since.

    The regime survives.
