ACLU, Others, File Lawsuit Against New Pennsylvania Law Requiring Voters at Polls to Show Government-Photo ID

On May 1, the American Civil Liberties Union and many other public interest groups filed a lawsuit on behalf of some Pennsylvania voters who do not possess government-photo ID cards. See this press release, which has links to the complaint and details about the individual voter plaintiffs.

Most of the recently passed state photo-ID laws from southern states have been blocked this year by the Voting Rights Section of the U.S. Justice Department. But most states are not covered by section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, so whether these laws may go into effect depends on the outcome of state court lawsuits, such as this one. So far the Wisconsin photo-ID law passed this year has been blocked by state courts in Wisconsin. The new Pennsylvania case is called Applewhite v Commonwealth.

  1. How many of these laws were patterned after ALEC “model” legislation?

What interest do Fortune 500 companies have in whether individual citizens have a photo ID in order to register to vote? Could it possibly be to suppress voter registration in communities which might typically be less inclined to vote for politicians who are conservative, Republican, anti-worker, anti-labor, pro-1% politicians?

    Nahhhhhhhhh…

  2. YOU CAN BODY SEARCH AMERICANS AT THE AIRPORT; HAVE THEM SPEND SO MUCH OF THEIR PRECIOUS TIME ON LINE WAITING TO BOARD A PLANE; BUT CAN’T ASK FOR ID WHEN PEOPLE COME TO VOTE.

IF SOMEONE HAS BEEN REGISTERED TO VOTE; THAT IS THEIR CREDENTIALS HAVE BEEN VERIFIED AND THEY HAVE A CARD THAT SHOW THEM AS BEING REGISTERED WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL IN ASKING THEM TO SHOW THEIR REGISTRATION CARD OR THEIR US PASSPORT. COULD IT BE THAT UNDOCUMENTED ONES MIGHT GET IN TO VOTE ILLEGALLY AT THE LAST MINUTE. wink, wink!!! nahhhhhhhhh

  3. Someone can get on an airplane with government photo-ID. If someone shows up at the airport without it, TSA has procedures to help those people. It involves asking the person enough personal information so that TSA can get a credit report on that person. Then the TSA employee asks questions that only that individual would know the answer to.

If you read the press release that I linked to, you can see many people do not have the necessary documents. And anyone might lose his or her wallet immediately before election day, or on election day. It could happen to you.

So, then…your theory is that Mexicans come illegally to the United States with the objective of…voting?

BTW…thank you for all the capital letters. I was running low.

  5. I live in PA and was forced to show photo ID to vote in the recent primary. I gave them my military ID and they refused it because it did not have an expiration date. They asked me for my drivers’ license and I refused. We compromised on my concealed carry permit! They didn’t know what it was so I told them fairly loudly that is was my permit to carry a gun. The room went silent but I voted (for Ron Paul!) without incident.

So…is the thinking at your polling place that one’s face has an expiration?

What fine thanks for your service to our country.

You should write a letter of thanks to ALEC.
