Libertarian Registration Increased 11.4% Between November 2012 and March 2014

The number of registered voters in the United States, in the 30 states (plus D.C.) that have registration by party, declined by 1,516,272 between November 2012 and March 2014. Nevertheless, during this period Libertarian registration in those states increased 11.4%. The registration total for all other nationally-organized parties declined during that period. The number of voters who are independent or who are registered in miscellaneous parties increased .7% during that period.

The April 1, 2014 printed Ballot Access News will include a chart showing the number of voters in each party, and the number registered as independents or in miscellaneous designations, by state. All of the data is from January, February, or March 2014, except that data from New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania is not available for 2014, so it is from 2013.

  1. I always look forward to this registration tally. The information on registration numbers is always fascinating. Thanks for your work on this, Richard!

  2. 31 PURGE lists.

Abolish all super dangerous robot party hack stuff.

    P.R. and nonpartisan App.V.

  3. Richard,

Election Code 5100(b) states in part a requirement of at least
1 percent of the entire vote of the state at the last preceding
gubernatoral election have declared their intention to
    affiliate with that party.

No one other than the electors registered on or prior to December 31, 2010 has “declared their intention to affiliate
with a party”, with the exception of those registering on the
circa 2007 HAVA registration, By the act of registration
on the HAVA form they have affiliated with the political
party named on the form. For those intending to affiliate
prior to December 31, 2010, they had the additional requirement of voting to complete the affiliation into the
party. Please also note Election Code 2151.

    Sincerely, Mark Seidenberg

  4. In DC Libertarian voter registration has increased from 179 in November 2013 to 240 in March 2014. The Board of Elections only printed voter registration forms including Libertarian in March 2013, after the party earned permanent ballot status in November 2012. It seems to be a fairly steady 15-20 new registrants monthly, though we are hoping that will increase since we are running 8 candidates.

  5. Which state has had the largest increase in voter registration of LP and which state has had the largest increase in membership to the national party–in past two years?

  6. As of March 10, 2014 there were 46,233 registered Libertarians on the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
