Internal Dissention in Montana Republican Party Over Open Primary

According to this article, leaders of the Montana Republican Party disagree with each other over whether the party should soon file a lawsuit to close the party’s primary. The state convention resolved in favor of a closed Republican primary but most party leaders seem unwilling to follow through with a lawsuit, at least this year.

  1. The Montana Republican Party should consider trying to catch up with election systems that have been around for more than 100 years; a unifying all-party (and independents) fair voting system that’s good for the all.

When SOS McCulloch was testifying on the Top 2 Open Primary last year, she should have pointed out that Montana’s primary system was not materially different than Idaho’s old system, that both states were under the same appeals court jurisdiction, and it would be pretty unlikely that Montana could win a legal challenge.

    She should also have pointed out that Washington had a primary system that was not materially different than Montana’s (it was even referred to as Montana-style), and been replaced by the Top 2 Open Primary which has been upheld by the states.

    Instead she decided to be a party hack, and will end up having to maintain dossiers on the political beliefs of Montana’s citizens.
