The Morristown Daily Record has this story about ballot order in New Jersey, and the August 11 drawing held by the Morris County Elections Office to determine order of candidates on the ballot who are not Republican or Democratic nominees.

  1. It is very interesting how conveniently they want to use the number of votes cast instead of the number of people actually signing up to vote. By counting the number of votes cast both the Democrats and GOP qualify, but not by how many actual persons showed up to vote.

    Using the same rationale they are using in New Jersey, you could have ridiculous results on some places and occasions. For instance, in Puerto Rico we have at-large State Senators and at-large State Representatives. The two major parties in Puerto Rico nominate six candidates for each position, so in the primary people can vote for up to six people.
    If they had used the sum of the votes cast in the 2008 New Progressive Party primary for at large Senators to determine the number of NPP voters would have given a ridiculous result. The sum of votes for all the candidates in the NPP primary ballot was 3,703,223 (this is not a typo).
    According to the 2010 US Census, Puerto Rico had a population of 3,725,789.
