According to this story, the State Board is getting approximately 100 phone complaints per day from voters who are too late to register into either the Democratic Party or the Republican Party, so as to be able to vote in those parties’ presidential primaries. New York easily has the nation’s most restrictive time limits on when voters can join a party if they wish to vote in an upcoming primary.

See my previous comment on the post about New York State’s party registration numbers in which I noted that a lot of Sanders supporters are calling the New York primary rules part of a conspiracy against them (similar to the conspiracy by Arizona to make voting for their candidate difficult).
New York’s rules are restrictive and should be changed, but in my opinion there is a good reason to have closed primaries. In any case, the presidential campaigns of all candidates should familiarize themselves with each state’s rules and inform their candidates’ independent supporters accordingly. It’s not rocket science to know when the deadlines are and let people know.
