Three Independent Presidential Petitions Submitted to Wyoming on Deadline — 13 Comments

  1. I did not know that Evan McMullin was even petitioning in Wyoming. How many signatures did his campaign submit?

  2. The newest BAN shows the deadline is August 29. The old one, showing August 30, was wrong.

  3. The McMullin Facebook page has pictures of the submission of 5,000+ signatures. I suspect they accomplished the seemingly impossible task by using the network of LDS Wards. It’s a little know fact that Wyoming is home to the third largest percentage of Mormons in the US (9% of Wyoming residents are Mormons).

  4. I saw that same Facebook post. Wyoming’s requirement is, I believe about 3,300. If they get a 60% validity rate, which isn’t unheard of, they’ll fall just short. However, if they petitioned in the manner suggested above, their validity rate will probably be a bit higher. I think they’ll end up making Wyoming, but with not much room to spare.

  5. An article in the Casper Star Tribune says the McMullin campaign turned in “about 4,000 signatures”. Validation results will be announced by September 8th, according to Kai Schon, the new Wyoming State Director of Elections.

  6. There were paid petitioners in Wyoming working Green Party and Rocky de la Fuente. I never heard about any of them carrying the Evan McMullin petition, but maybe some of them did.

Unless the McMullin campaign collected those signatures door-to-door with a walk list of registered voters, or unless they already checked those signatures against a current state voter list, I doubt they will survive the state’s validity check.

  7. I just got it confirmed that the Evan McMullin campaign did utilize paid petition signature gatherers in Wyoming, at least toward the end, if not the entire time, although it should be noted that they got a very late start.

  8. Speaking of McMullin, I read a report in Politico saying that he did not submit petitions in Oregon, and apparently yesterday was their petition deadline. I’m guessing that he also took a pass on Arizona, which I believe also had a petition deadline this week.

If that is correct, then I think this is the status of his ballot access: Confirmed in AR, CO, IA, ID, LA, MN, and UT, totaling 49 EVs. Petitions filed in VA and WY,totaling 16 EVs awaiting confirmation. I think he can still potentially petition on the ballot in KY, ND, and RI, totaling 15 EV. So it seems that his ballot access ceiling is twelve states, and ballot access to at most 80 EVs. Am I missing any other states? This doesn’t count write in access.

  9. Arizona petition deadline is September 9th, as is Rhode Island and Kentucky. Those are the last deadlines for President.
