Duel Initiatives over How Utah Political Parties Nominate

Two statewide initiatives are circulating in Utah on the subject of how parties nominate candidates. The initiative sponsored by “Count my Vote” eliminates caucuses, and provides that all candidates would obtain nominations by winning a primary. The initiative sponsored by “Keep My Voice” provides that all candidates must make a good showing at a party meeting before being allowed to get on the primary ballot. Current law is a mixture of the two.

A recent poll shows that if both initiatives get on the ballot, the “Count my Vote” initiative would win, and the “Keep My Voice” initiative would lose.

Duel Initiatives over How Utah Political Parties Nominate — 5 Comments

  1. IF the gerrymander hacks can amend/repeal enacted initiatives, THEN such initiatives are useless.

  2. Suppose candidates simply campaigned to communicate with voters and then the voters have their say in the general election by writing-in who they want for which offices. No petitions, no fees, no quotas, no primary elections. No elimination heats. A write-in ballot is big enough for everyone.
The candidates just fill out a post card size form and the election officials count every damn write-in vote and republishes the name of everyone who received a vote. Treat the voters as if they really matter.

  3. OVERALL — UTAH IS STILL IN THE BAD OLDE DAYS OF THE 1880S —

    JUST BEFORE OFFICIAL PRIMARIES/BALLOTS.

    NO PRIMARIES, CAUCUSES AND CONVENTIONS.

    PR AND APPV

  4. Generally, in states with the initiative, if two initiatives pass simultaneously and they contradict each other, the one that got the most popular votes prevails and the other one doesn’t.
