California June 2018 Voters Guide Will Mention Constitution Party

The Constitution Party is not a ballot-qualified party in California. Nevertheless, the June 2018 Voters Guide (which is mailed to all registered voters by the Secretary of State) will mention the Constitution Party indirectly. Don Grundmann, a registered member of the Constitution Party, is on the ballot for U.S. Senate. Although his ballot label will be “party preference: none”, his paid statement in the Voters Guide will say that he is the state chairman of the Constitution Party.

As far as is known, this is the first time the name of an unqualified party has been mentioned in the California Voters Guide. Only statewide candidates can have paid statements in the Guide. Candidates for legislature and U.S. House cannot have such statements.

The Socialist Workers Party had a candidate on the California primary ballot in 2016, Eleanor Garcia. However she did not have a paid statement in the Voters Guide.

  1. How many ZILLION classes of current and past election stuff are in the BAN mega data-base ???

  2. Nothing new here, all political parties in USA, prohibit such free speech liberties. That is the nature up plurality elections.

If you’re ready from improvements, the United Coalition has been using the pure proportional representation (PPR) voting system for more than twenty-three consecutive years and PPR works fine.

  3. Richard:
Isn’t there a lawsuit currently going through the Courts concerning a previous none ballot qualified candidate, where his statement was changed with a similar declaration, without being notified by the Secretary of State Office? So why wouldn’t the Secretary of State Office not treat him the same as that other candidate.

  4. @Deemer,

The voter’s pamphlet included a picture, the candidates name, and their party preference as it appeared on the ballot. Paul Merrit’s submission included:

California make history . . . elect an independent Senator Merritt. Elect an independent thinker. Elect the person, not the Party-in-power’s. [policy and issue statements and biographical background omitted]. Most Billionaire Republicans and Union boss Democrats don’t represent you! Merritt is Independent for all Citizens. Paul Merritt is a Californian!

So Merritt expressed that he would be an independent senator, and a independent thinker, and an independent for all citizens, and not a billionaire Republican, nor a union-boss Democrat.

This has Merrit’s statement in the voter’s guide.

This includes a similar statement on his web site.

If Merritt were an independent thinker and not a foil for a … lawyer, he would be working with the SOS to create a system where candidates could see what their entry would appear as. I’m sure that Merritt would have been able to say in his statement that he was a registered independent voter.

  5. In 2016, there was a statement that said that the candidate was a “Constitutionalist”.

Grundmann should join Mimi Soltysik’s law suit.

  6. Look at your own team and make it better. That’s called team psychology.

If your team doesn’t provide free speech liberties, equal treatment and equal time then you should look in the mirror first before to worry about others.

  7. Having Don Grundmann at the helm of the California CP is nothing but bad news for the California CP’s PR and outreach efforts.

  8. In the United States, national officers of political parties don’t have any means to determine the state officers of their own party. And the California Secretary of State’s newest Report of Registration shows that the California Secretary of State’s office thinks Don Grundmann is state chair. That is not to say the California Secretary of State does a very good job of determining who the state chair of a party is, when there is an internal dispute. The previous Secretary of State, Debra Bowen, did a bad job in 2008 of determining the proper state officers of the American Independent Party.

  9. New Age cult/gang political parties like Old Age cult/gang religions ???

Courts sometimes have to determine the top folks in the latter — and now the former ???

  10. @Richard Winger,

Don Grundnmann should join the Soltysik lawsuit. He is aggrieved in that he may not have his true political preference appear on the ballot.

  11. I am voting for him on the ballot. However I am not sure who he really is. So I am writing in another name to find out who he really is!

  12. Diana scrimer, you stated you are “writing in another name to find out who he really is!” That is a good move
on your part. One less vote for Dr. Don Grundmann is a
    good thing.

    Mark Seidenberg, Vice Chairman
    American Independent Party of California
