Neal Simon Qualifies for Maryland Ballot as an Independent for U.S. Senate

The Maryland State Board of Elections announced on August 10 that independent candidate Neal Simon has enough valid signatures to be on the ballot for U.S. Senate. The requirement is 10,000 signatures; Simon submitted 17,000. See this story.

Simon is one of the nineteen candidates backed by Unite America (formerly the Centrist Project). He is also the first statewide independent candidate to take advantage of the 2017 liberalization of the ballot access law, which lowered the number of signatures from 1% of the registered voters (approximately 45,000 signatures) to exactly 10,000 signatures. That change was prompted by a lawsuit, Dorsey v Lamone, which received financial support from COFOE (the Coalition for Free & Equal Elections).

  1. Each election cycle is NEW.

EQUAL ballot access requirements for ALL candidates for the SAME office in the SAME area.

  2. As I am related to the first and second Governors if Maryland, Benjamin Ogle and his son who hung out with George Washington, we wish him the best in his campaign and we offer to help should he deem that appropriate. The Ogle Mansion is now the Annapolis Admiral Club. The domed capital building was built in 1795, the port is where the filming of Roots took place and the whole state is rich in American historical links with the United Coalition in 2020 so we look forward to the collaboration.

  4. Unfortunately pure proportional representation (PPR) didn’t come around until the 1900s so early Ogle politicians did not have the knowledge about PPR which most likely could have led to peaceful alternatives to civilwar.

Now knowledge about PPR is sweeping the earth and so future civil war could be thwarted.

  5. Richard, the Politics1.com website has three other independents listed. Do you know where they are at with their ballot access?
Steve Gladstone (I) – Computer Code Developer & ’16 Pres. Candidate
Michael Puskar (I) – Storage Facility Manager & ’16 Pres. Candidate
    Edward Shlikas (I) – Retired School Facility Manager, Ex-Teacher & ’16 Candidate
    Neal Simon (I) – Businessman & Philanthropist

  6. They are almost certainly either declared write-in candidates, or people who told the State Board they would be petitioning, but who didn’t get the needed number of signatures.

  7. C.O. beat me to it. So I’ll go with “Get ready for three months of, “His campaign managers are Felix Unger and Oscar Madison.” and “Can two divorced men share a candidate without driving each other crazy?” Cue the opening theme music.
