Democratic U.S. House Nominee in Florida 17th District Dies

On September 23, April Freeman, the Democratic nominee for U.S. House in Florida’s 17th district, died. See this story. The 17th district is in south central Florida and is a Republican district.

Her name will remain on the ballot, but the Democratic Party will choose a new nominee. Notices will be posted at polling places saying that a vote for Freeman will be counted for the individual whom the party chooses, and the notices will name that person. Thanks to Political Wire

  1. Elections should be cancelled in the case of death or catastrophic injury. It is ghoulish to urge voters to vote for a dead person.

    If Florida used Top 2, they could schedule the special election for November. Even if a runoff were required they would be able to elect before the start of the 2019 term.

  2. No reason to cancel the planned election . Florida election rules state that a deceased candidate’s name remains on the ballot until a replacement candidate is nominated by the candidate’s political party.[1] They need to get on the ball and nominate one.
