Eight Oregon legislators have introduced SJR 22, which would amend the Constitution to change the voting age to 16. If the legislature approves it, it would be placed on the November 2020 ballot for the voters to decide whether to approve it. Thanks to Political Wire for this news.

Voting age should be 14 for municipal (school boards have a lot of weight on high schooler’s educations, those students should have say in who is on said board), 15 for state offices, 16 for congress, and 17 for president. And Jeff I’m no leftist… die-hard minarchist.

This is actually one reason that we have the Electoral College. Different states are able have different qualifications for voting. Some restrict voting by ex-convicts more than others. The Electoral College compensates for different voting qualifications in each state. If we didn’t have the Electoral College, a state might attempt to affect the outcome by allowing minors, convicts, and resident aliens to vote.

My opinion on this is simple: no taxation without representation. 16 year olds are legally permitted to work a job, drive a motor vehicle, and be taxed for it, thus they should have the right to decide how their tax dollars are spent.

“automatic voter registration” is not nefarious. All citizens have the right to vote. It shouldn’t be made hard to use that right, it should be as easy as possible, and every single citizens should be automatically registered. Opposing easing voting access seems asinine.

Why 16? Why not lower the voting age to whenever the youngsters are potty trained. Then watch the pedophiles line up to be employed to do voter registration.
