Connecticut Green Party Nominee in Special Legislative Election Polls Double the Vote of the Republican Nominee

Connecticut held special elections in five legislative districts on February 26.  In the 39th House district, centered on New London, the Green Party nominee polled 28.52%.  The Democratic nominee won the seat with 51.33%.  The Republican Party nominee polled 11.67% on the Republican line and 3.04% on the Independent Party line.  An independent candidate polled 5.44%.  The Working Families Party did not enter this race.

The other special elections were in the State Senate districts 3, 5, and 6; and the State House district 99.

  1. In 2018, the winner was endorsed by both Democratic and Green parties, with no Republican opposition.

    He along with four other re-elected legislators resigned in order to join the Connecticut gubernatorial administration. Incidentally, Republicans won two of the five special election, which were regarded to be five safe Democratic seats.

    The Green Party candidate is a member of the New London Board of Education. In 2013 and 2015 she was elected as a fusion Republican-Green candidate. In 2017, she was elected (barely) without the Republican line.

    Candidates in the special election were chosen by party committees rather than by primary.

    The petition candidate is also a school board member. He was first elected at age 22, and was several times a Republican legislative candidate. He lost as a Republican in 2013, but returned to the board as a Democrat in 2015 and 2017. He appears to be particularly outspoken. I don’t know whether he sought the Democratic nomination or not.

    The Democrat, Republican, and Green candidates all qualified for public funding ($14,000). This was said to be a first for a Green candidate in Connecticut.If I
