Congressman Justin Amash Says that President Trump Has Engaged in Impeachable Conduct

On May 18, Congressman Justin Amash (R-Michigan) tweeted that President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.  He said this after reading the Mueller Report.  Amash also said that few other Republican members of Congress have read the report.

Amash’s outspoken comments might suggest a willingness to run for president in 2020, conceivably as a candidate for the Libertarian presidential nomination.  Thanks to Political Wire for this news.  See this Newsweek story.  UPDATE:  see this Bloomberg story, which mentions the idea of Amash seeking the Libertarian nomination.

  6. I wonder how Pelosi and the House Democrats, the Democratic Presidential candidates, and the Democratic base will react if impeachment proceedings are initiated by a Republican who switches to the Libertarian Party and enters the Presidential race.

    It will come up in the campaign and the Democratic candidates are going to have to acknowledge, on their own primary debate stage, the presence of a Libertarian candidate in the race who initiated the impeachment proceedings because House Democrats failed to do so. They can either support the Libertarian in his impeachment pursuit or make some excuse why it was a bad idea, effectively supporting Trump. That’s going to crush the soul of the Democratic base.

    It will also come up in the general campaign debates. Even if Amash doesn’t make the debate stage, they will be forced to acknowledge his presence in the race.

  11. Andy has it right – all presidents (except for a few of the founding fathers) have engaged in impeachable conduct. I’m generally supportive of Amash, but this is just grandstanding. He’s probably already recognized he’s out of touch with his district and so he will go the Flake route and quit rather than lose, and then he will follow the footsteps of a half dozen Repubs whose swan song is to get the LP presidential nomination and then fade into obscurity.

    My question for Amash is this: what is the impeachable conduct? What “high crimes and misdemeanors”? “Attempted obstruction”? Really? What federal law defines that as a crime? References please.

    For those of you with TDS, don’t misunderstand my criticism of Amash. IMO Trump is a moron. He is truly not fit to be president. He appears to have a severe case of ADD. He contradicts himself and changes his mind with the wind. He has absolutely zero foundational political principles. His choices for who he surrounds himself with are deplorable – Manafort, Scaramucci, Munchin, Nielson, Javanka, Bolton, Pompeo and many more – I quite frankly can’t think of a single person at a high level in Trump’s administration who is competent – and many are crooks. All of that said, if we start removing presidents because they are morons, we can kiss what little of the Constitution is still left goodbye.

  15. It’s really disheartening to see people here defend impeachable actions with the argument of “everyone does it”. This is clear partisan mental gymnastics.

  16. I was not defending anything. The missile attack against Syria and the Executive Order banning bumpstocks are both impeachable offenses in my book.

    Having said this, the standards of conduct for Presidents, as well as other elected and appointed officials in our government, has become so low, that it seems rather hypocritical for anyone who was around during the Obama administration, or the George W. Bush administration, who did not clamor for them to be impeached, to raise a fuss over Donald Trump. The same goes with the Clinton administration and the George HW Bush administration. Trump’s wrongdoings at this point seem pale in comparison to those of his recent predecessors.

  20. Justin Amash – the guy who owns a company that manufactures products in China suddenly says President Trump should be impeached. It’s only ironic that the tariffs on Chinese products will now hit Amash’s products. Amash the hypocrite.
