This Los Angeles Times story notes that over 700 people have filed the simple form with the Federal Election Commission that says they are running for President.
The FEC website currently shows 804 filings, although at least some are duplicates. Of Libertarians in particular Cecil Ince is not actively running but is listed twice, and Joseph Maldonado is in federal prison after he attempted to hire a hitman to murder a critic of his zoo operations.
Hey, Gene Debs had over 900,000 votes in 1920 while serving time in prison for violating the Espionage Act.

Imagine if we had nationwide Maine/Nebraska-style district election of presidential electors. Here’s a project idea for someone who can do graphics: Based on their FEC filing address, figure out which congressional district they are in and put together a color-coded map of how many of these people would be running in each district.
