Largest Newspaper in Maine Urges Legislature to Pass Ranked Choice Voting for Presidential

The Portland, Maine Press Herald, the largest newspaper in the state, has this editorial asking the legislature to pass the bill that would provide for ranked choice voting in the presidential primary.

The editorial contains a factual error. Maine law does not now provide for ranked choice voting for president in general elections. The bill that is pending, LD 1083, would provide for ranked choice voting for both the presidential primary and for president in the general election.

  1. I wonder how RCV would work, considering that Maine allocates Electoral Votes by CD and statewide? Guess I’ll have to read the bill.

Donkeys esp. have gone *legalese* since the many delegate selection rules battles at 1968-1988 Donkey national conventions.

Some Results- 1992 Clinton and 2008 Obama.

LD 1083 would maintain the current system of electing electors by congressional district and two statewide.

This might have produced interesting results in 1992, when Perot finished second overall, but only by 316 votes, fewer votes than were cast for any of Andre Marrou (1681), Lenora Fulani (519), or Howard Phillips (464). So you are in recount country along with debate about transfers, with voter’s intent be divined.

Meanwhile Perot was a clear 2nd in one CD, while Bush was a clear 2nd in the other.
