Washington, D.C. Ballot Access Relief Bill Signed Into Law

On August 13, the Mayor of Washington, D.C., signed B23-0864. It lowers the number of signatures for independent presidential candidates, and the presidential nominees of unqualified parties, from approximately 5,000 signatures, to exactly 250 signatures. The law only pertains to the 2020 election.

  1. The Constitutional amendment that allowed DC to choose Presidential electors only states that it is up to Congress to determine how they are chosen. IMO, they ought to allow all US citizens who don’t reside in any state (DC, the territories, US expats, and military abroad) to vote for DC electors.

    Does this bill change the deadline for submitting petitions for 2020?

  5. no. I think the Mayor waited until after the deadline because she didn’t want Kanye West to hear about it and to file a petition. But I am just speculating.
