On September 14, the Libertarian Party sent out a press release stating that Jo Jorgensen is on the ballot in all 51 jurisdictions that have electoral votes, but no large newspaper has yet carried the news.

  2. This is the best presidential election ever for a Libertarian Party candidate in terms of lack of competition from other minor party and/or independent candidates in terms of ballot access. How many states is Jo Jorgensen going to be the only other option on the ballot besides Biden and Trump? I think it is 11 or 12 states. That is huge. The next candidate in line in terms of ballot access is Green Party candidate, Howie Hawkins, I think he’s only got like 33 or 34 states, or 32 states plus DC, or 33 states plus DC. After this, I think it will go (in descending order for ballot access) Rocky De La Fuente, Brock Pierce, Don Blakenship, Gloria La Riva, and Kanye West. American Solidarity Party has ballot access in a few states, and then there’s a handful of insignificant others. Somebody correct me if I made an error in ranking these candidates in terms of number of ballots they will appear, but if I am off, I think I have it close to accurate.

    The closeness of the race between Biden and Trump is going to work against all minor party and independent candidates, and with Trump being an incumbent now, I expect Republicans to galvanize behind him more so than in 2016. Even though Biden is a former Vice President, it is so blatantly apparent that he’s not a good candidate that the majority of Democrats have little enthusiasm for him, however, the Democrats really want to get rid of Trump, so most of them will “hold their nose” and vote for Biden anyway, as it will be more of a Stop Trump vote than a pro-Biden vote.

    I expect Jorgensen to do relatively well, but she will likely get less votes than Gary Johnson got in 2016, not because she’s a worse candidate than Johnson, she’s certainly better on issues from a libertarian perspective, but rather because in 2016 Hillary Clinton was widely hated, and viewed as a disappointment even by most Democrats, much like Joe Biden is today, but Donald Trump was new to running for office, and had less solid support from Republicans than he has now that he’s an incumbent. I see the “wasted vote” and “this is the most important election ever” syndrome being higher this time than in 2016. Jorgensen also has less name recognition, and less campaign money, than Johnson had.

    Jo Jorgensen has the benefit of running in an era where more people know the word libertarian than did back in 1996 when she was Harry Browne’s VP, and she also has the benefit of running against a weak field of minor party and independent candidates, as when Harry Browne ran in 1996, he had to go up against two far more well known, and well funded contenders in Ross Perot and Ralph Nader. Jorgensen has to run against three wealthy minor party/independent candidates in Rocky De La Fuente, Brock Pierce, and Kanye West, and West is also a major celebrity, however, none of these candidates are running effective campaigns, and they are all on the ballot in less than 25 states (I think Kanye will only be on the ballot in 10 states).

    So my prediction is that Jorgensen will get the 2nd highest presidential vote total in Libertarian Party history, in terms of number of votes, and in terms of percent of the vote. A lot of this will be due to two words: BALLOT ACCESS.

He’ll win so many times he’ll get tired of winning, and then keep winning anyway. Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden and Hunter Biden will all go to prison. The Libertarians will finally at long last realize there is absolutely no difference between them and Republicans anymore, not even the trivial differences they used to have, and all get on the Trump train.

  7. I agree with Andy. Also l don’t think that Gary Johnson has great coverage when he ran. He got a lot of votes partially because of his and Welds political background. When he did have the coverage from mainstream media it was for the media to make fun of him. That probably ended up helping him a little bit but not that much more. One minor disagreement that l have here. I think that Libertarian’s campaign on social media is decent. Compare how many people view her videos to those of other third parties.

    Brock Pierce said that he had no limit to campaign spending through his own personal funds. He is indeed creating a lot of ads. Not sure how much it costs for having it on National channels but he should have them played on them if that’s not the case.

  15. The 0.4% prediction for Jorgensen sounds about right. Libertarians always draw poorly in top races. A three candidate congressional race averages about 3-4%, lower races might be a bit higher.

  32. I’ve been a Libertarian for 40 years. I saw Jo Jorgenson at the LP National Convention in about 1992. I’m sure she’s an articulate spokesperson for the Libertarian Party. Unfortunately, when I look at her background, I see nothing to indicate that she would be any more competent at running the country than I would. At a time when most voters seem to be debating over whether the #1 priority is to keep Donald Trump in office or to vote him out, I find it difficult to imagine a scenario where she could win the presidency, even if she somehow got into the Debates and talked rings around both Trump and Biden. If I were still a journalist, it pains me to say it, but in spite of my own political leanings, I would have a hard time justifying any significant coverage of her candidacy, too.

    Another thing that will make it a steeper uphill fight for Jo and the Libertarians: I think Donald Trump’s brand of deregulation has poisoned the term “deregulation” in the minds of much of the electorate.

    That’s just my unemotional appraisal of the situation.

  50. The total vote total for Jorgensen is less important than the state by state details. Getting enough votes in key states to retain ballot access on the one hand and eclipsing 5% in 10 states on the other hand. The former saves time and money for the next campaign cycle. The later could qualify the campaign for matching funds that could invigorate LP efforts going forward.

    For the sake of comparison Gary Johnson got over 5% in 5 states and over 4% in 10 states in 2016.

    Not mentioned in Andy’s analysis is the potential for some voting synergy with 400+ LP candidates on the ballot in November including several that are running reasonably credible campaigns and stand a decent chance at attaining office.

  73. Certainly Biden and Trump will be on the ballot. Probably Jo and Howie. BUT US elections are so f ed up it really doesn’t matter who I vote for because NJ is a safe blue state i.e. it eill probably go democratic.
    My preference is to vote Green. But I do not particularly like Howie, I do like Jo. PLUS Jo is on all 51 ballots so theoretically has a chance to win. Howie does not.

    A 3rd party winnowing will follow the November 2020 polls. The field is crowded. And the pool of “protest ballots” limited. Most 3rd parties or independents are ineffectively organized. Worse, they fight the wrong fight.

    The battle is not for ephemeral high cost “access” with a short shelf life, sporadically distributed in states here or there. That is a costly diversion. Most 3rd parties cannot sustain such financial attrition. Their entire “campaign” is spent on regaining temporary access. Every cycle the 3rd parties are emptied of resources…for little real gain. To exploit the election space, the fight must be redirected into ballot qualification and continued development of actual functioning state parties.

  77. As to vote predictions (mentioned above), the model I use estimates Jorgensen’s return will be in the range of 2,104,546 to 3,060,151 votes.

    Dave Leip’s site reports 137,125,484 total votes in the 2016 general. For ease and to allow for ballot growth, round upward to 140M. Jorgensen’s ballot percentage will likely be about 1.5% to 2.2% of the total aggregate.

    These are conservative estimates.

  80. @Observer “Physics” suggest the LP will move upward in ballot count going forward, sort of by mass gravity effect.

    When I said “winnowing” of 3rd parties, I meant the LP will be somewhat unique. It’s mass cannot be ignored by the duopoly, and it will begin to be taken at par with the two majors. Simply by repeating its “LP in all 50 states” competitiveness in 2020, it is moving into rare latitudes. It should be the beneficiary of consolidation in the 3rd party realm.

    The LP has navigated into fair weather trade winds being (as Jim pointed out, and others) the only 3rd party option in over 20% of the States…one of only three party candidates in 12 states? So, LP’s existence is not in doubt (despite some claims to the contrary hereon.). Other 3rd parties–not so much. Most of those wayfarers are into the shoals, where breakup is nearly always the ultimate end.

    For its part, the LP should focus upon development of state affiliates, and exploit some of that “ballot access” expense by building ballot qualification. That way, in 2024 the LP would have significant economies to scale unavailable to other 3rd parties. It would also be able to come off the blocks much earlier. My two’s worth.

  81. Hi Floyd. As you know most states use top of ticket voting percentage thresholds to determine ballot access. The Jorgensen campaign has figured out the key states where some extra focus can make a difference for future ballot access on a dollar-adjusted basis. For all of its’ shortcomings in fund raising I see the current presidential campaign actually doing some pretty solid things to enhance the LP in the post campaign environment.

    You are correct that some states with pretty strong LP vote percentages need some extra support to get their state orgs rolling. My guess is that Idaho fits that bill quite well. Getting people to volunteer for the Jorgensen campaign is a great way to help as those contacts will be useful for future efforts at party building at the state level.
