I think many of these voters didn’t tell pollsters (strangers) they’re voting for President Trump because they’re afraid of possible violence against them.

All New Age pollsters secretly record responses for later purges. Everyone knows that. That’s why Trump supporters lie to them. They only tell the Old Age pollsters the truth.
In the real world, anonymous internet polls (not self selected sample ones, but random sample) are consistent with phone polls. The shy trump voter hypothesis lacks evidence to back it up. The polls were not wrong in 2016 either. Clinton won nationally by about exactly the 3% the polls predicted. She lost by 80,000 votes in 3 states, a small faction of 1% due to fast moving news just before the election which were not adequately polled at the state level often enough in the last few days before the election.
How many of those fast moving rigged news stories starting NOW to 3 Nov 2020 ???
Early voting in some States — TOO LATE for ***SURPRISE*** rigged stories.
Lots and lots. But pollsters have gotten better at adjusting for that.
