Nevada Bill to Double Number of Signatures for a New Political Party

Nevada State Senator Roberta Lange (D-Las Vegas) has introduced SB 292. It doubles the number of signatures for a new or previously unqualified party to get on the ballot, from 1% of the last U.S. House statewide vote, to 2%. Also it imposes a distribution requirement for all four U.S. House districts.

It also adds a straight-ticket device to the ballot. Nevada has never had a straight-ticket device.

Already Nevada’s party petition is too difficult. No one has used it since 2011, when Americans Elect qualified. In 2016, Jill Stein, Green Party presidential candidate, was on the ballot in 44 states plus D.C., but she was unable to get on in Nevada.

The bill has a hearing on April 1 in the Senate Legislative Operations & Elections Committee, at 4:00 p.m. Thanks to Janine Hansen for this news.

Nevada Bill to Double Number of Signatures for a New Political Party — 8 Comments

  1. The Greens may have qualified for the ballot in Nevada in 2016 if they had a) not waited until kind of late in the game to start their petition drive, and b) not hired some scumbag mercenary petition circulators who turned in a bunch of forged signatures.

I do agree that the requirement in Nevada is already tough, so it most definitely should not be increased.

  2. Abolish all ballot access censorship laws. Demand every candidate to pledge to free the ballot from the grip of the duopoly and return control of the ballot to the individual voters.

  3. At same time the Democratic Party sponsored For The People Act would virtually eliminate presidential primary matching funds for ‘third parties’ to use to get on the ballot around the U.S. (https://www.marylandmatters.org/2021/03/09/opinion-sarbanes-h-r-1-has-poison-pill-to-kill-minor-party-competition
), Nevada Democrats seek to make it even harder to get on the ballot in that state by doubling signature requirement. Can we sense a pattern here?

  4. This is the same Roberta Lange who was the Chair of the Nevada State Democratic Party, during 2016. The same chair who made a motion, seconded her own motion and then carried it, literally running of the stage thereafter. She was in violation of ‘Robert’s Rules of Order’ and committed malfeasance against the Delegation, at the State Convention in 2016. How did she even get elected? Now she wants to commit the ultimate act of voter suppression, without even letting Nevada residents vote on the matter. Virtually guaranteeing, no one will ever vote again for either of the self proclaimed major parties. I am sure they are fully aware that Independent Voters outnumber both the Democrats and Republicans combined, by a margin of 3 to one and that margin is growing. This is NOT democracy, this is facism.
