On April 14, the U.S. House Oversight and Reform Committee passed HR 51, which makes most of D.C. a state. The part of D.C. that would not be inside the new state consists of the White House, the Capitol, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, the Mall, and a few other federal buildings.

While expanding the court makes sense for many completely nonpartisan reasons such as increased number of cases and circuits, it’s dead on arrival in the senate.
DC statehood is something that the Green Party has long supported out of principle. The Democrats are just now starting to support it because doing so would help maintain their grip on power.
Likewise with the DC Statehood bill. Good idea, doa in Senate.

I might be OK with it if they also agree to break off northern Oregon and southern Washington (was part of Idaho involved with that movement?), as well as northern California (state of Jefferson), and split up some other parts of Cali into new states as well. Be careful what you wish for.
@Jeff Becker We need an amendment that mandates the break up any state whose population goes over 12 million. And a lower threshold for statehood of a population of 1 million. Territories should get voting seats in the house but not in the senate.

By this rule, CA & TX could become 3-4 new states each, and FL & NY could become 2-3 new state each. A careful division of those states should be able to maintain a close 50-50 red-blue US Senate
More leftists in congress voting for more socialism and gun control would be a good thing. Unfortunately, it won’t happen. Instead, we’ll get more plutocracy, social repression, mixing church and state, militarized police, official and unofficial racism, fascist insurrectionists, criminal injustice and law enfarcement. If gun rights are lost, or restricted to the point of being useless, there will be no chance of having a libertarian, or libertarian leaning, society.
We don’t need any more Republican states. Republicans are disproportionately represented in the senate and electoral college as it is. Thanks to that they have been able to pack the courts with far more far right judges and justices than their share of the vote dictates. Those courts have ruled that partisan gerrymandering is aok. And that has led to Republicans gerrymandering themselves an advantage in state legislatures and therefore also in the US House.
It’s a self perpetrated system of minority rule that’s very similar to the racist apartheid system that used to exist in South Africa and Rhodesia. And it likewise has its roots in slavery and segregation in the US. So does the filibuster, the war on drugs, militarized policing, racist law enforcement, the school to prison pipeline, the filibuster, and lots of other things. It adds up to a web of racism, sexism and other bigotry that underlies the entire system of power.
What we need are real solutions like making DC and Puerto Rico states. Ending the filibuster. Abolishing the police and ICE. Ending the drug war. Abortion on demand and without apology, publicly paid for everyone along with medicine, housing, transportation, child care, food, equal schooling, AND all basic needs. A universal basic income. REPARATIONS. Real gun control and a $20 an hour living wage. We need real action on global warming climate crisis, term limits for the courts. We need wealth taxes and stock trade taxes.
Are the Democrats going to do any of this? No, they will just roll over and be submissive to the fascist Republicans like usual, while suppressing the Green and Socialist parties.

It’s a wonder that our Constitution has survived as long as it has. Could be those “anti-democratic” elements keep the system in equilibrium. Check our Aristotle’s Politics. He says each form of government, democracy, aristocracy and monarchy have strengths and weaknesses, and that the best form of government is a combination of all three forms because a mixed system checks the weaknesses of any one form.
In a sense, our Madisionian Constitution fulfills the requirements of Aristotle’s mixed system. The House of Representatives is the democratic element, the Senate and the courts are the aristocratic element, and the President is the monarchic element.
Madison and Aristotle belong in the past. The slavery system and capitalism belong in the past. Only democracy and socialism or ideally communism belongs in the future.
Through gerrymandering the house and the legislatures have also become aristocratic.

It only seems sensible that if Congress votes to again reduce the size of the District of Columbia, it should (for historical purposes) make it 1,776 acres, less than 3 square miles. No one should live within the boundaries & the City of Washington be transferred intact to the State of Maryland operating under the same rules politically as the City of Baltimore. Maryland’s Congressional delegation would than increase by 1 seat in the next re-apportionment.
Neither Maryland nor D.C. residents want that.

It’s a nonstarter for now, but we only need a couple more Democratic senators to get rid of the filibuster and add Columbia as a state. This would not face the issues in state legislatures that any of your other proposals would.
Mind reading isn’t required. Anyone who has lived in the area knows that the vast majority of people in D.C., Maryland and Virginia oppose any addition of D.C. to Maryland or parts of Maryland and Virginia to D.C.
Scandinavian countries have the best system. It’s why they have the happiest people. People aren’t happy when there’s too much capitalism like in the USA or too much socialism like in North Korea. We need a mix that’s just right, something like Denmark.

Those lists of countries that put the happiest people in Scandanavia are such a crock. There is a cultural bias to always say that they are happy. There is a better way to measure actual happiness:
Denmark has the same suicide rate as the Congo.
Norway has a higher suicide rate than Yemen.
Sweden has the same suicide rate as the United States.
Finland has a higher suicide rate than North Korea.
And it’s not Switzerland, either. Switzerland has a higher suicide rate than Rwanda.
