San Francisco Chronicle Story about Shrinking Number of Registered Independent Voters

The San Francisco Chronicle has this story about California voter registration statistics. It points out that the share of voters who are registered Republican, and the share that is registered Democratic, are both growing, at the expense of registered independents.

The story does not mention any other parties. The Libertarian Party has grown at a faster rate than any other category over the last two years, but the reporters did not include that fact. Thanks to Scott Lay for the link.

San Francisco Chronicle Story about Shrinking Number of Registered Independent Voters — 6 Comments

  1. The article’s a typical pro-two party state propaganda piece. I’m going to see if they have it posted on their Facebook Page and push back against their narrative.

  2. Iirc Cali has multiple categories of people who think they are registered independent. I’m forgetting the exact names but something like decline to state as well as a separate no preference category. I’m shaky on that second one since they put it in there after I moved out but pretty sure I read here there is one. Then on top of all that there’s the American independent, which actually is a party but has a name that leads people to think they are registered without a party. Is the combined registration of all these going down, if so by how much and is it more than a blip on the radar?

  3. It appears that it is mostly the effect of the 2020 election. People who registered in order to vote in a primary are quite likely to choose R or D. California has also made it easy to switch parties on line. So coming into the primary you had new voters choosing R or D and you had some independents choosing a party. When they registered in 2017, 2018, or 2019 they shrugged their shoulders and registered Idunno.

    From just before the 2020 general election until now, independents have begun to increase again. This reflects new voters before the general election.

    Between elections, most new registrations are a side effect of going to the DMV. People aren’t going to get registered if there are no election. During those periods, much larger numbers register as Indifferent.

  4. The new United Coalition USA doesn’t concern ourselves with how people register to vote within the own state. We respect everyone’s right to register and/or proclaim as they wish.

    We’re bringing the new unity phenomena to the Los Angeles and Maricopa County Mini-state elections now through July 4th.

    Both paper and digital voting under pure proportional representation (PPR), our 26th consecutive year, is going on now;
