Natural Law Stronghold County Supported Ron Paul

Jefferson County, Iowa, was the stronghold of the Natural Law Party, while that party existed. The party was associated with the Maharishi and his Transcendental Meditation movement. That movement’s university is in Fairfield, the county seat and largest town in Jefferson County. In November 1992, Jefferson County has cast 22.8% of its vote for John Hagelin for president. In November 1996, Hagelin had received 21.3% in Jefferson County; in November 2000, Hagelin had received 14.7% in that county.

At the 2008 Iowa Republican caucus, the Jefferson County vote was: Ron Paul 298, Mike Huckabee 263, Mitt Romney 132, Fred Thompson 80, John McCain 38, Rudy Giuliani 25, Duncan Hunter 3.

At the 2008 Democratic caucus, the Jefferson County vote was: Barack Obama 682, John Edwards 545, Hillary Clinton 245, Joseph Biden 21, all others zero.

In the Republican caucus, Jefferson County was the only Iowa county to be carried by someone other than either Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney. Thanks to Eric Garris for this news.

  1. Quote>”In the Republican caucus, Jefferson County was the only Iowa county to vote for someone other than either Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney. Thanks to Eric Garris for this news.”< ~~ If that’s the case, RP’s 10% came only from this county…is that correct? I just don’t quite understand how 298 votes translates into 10% overall, unless there were only 2,980 votes cast in the entire state. Can we get some straight facts here, please?

  2. “I just don’t quite understand how 298 votes translates into 10% overall”

839 votes were cast in Jefferson County. Ron Paul received 298 of those votes (35%) for first place in that county. For the whole state, Paul received 11,598 of 116,114 total votes. 10% of the state.

  3. Response to John M. Knapp comment:

Many critics consider John M. Knapp to be a self-promoting spammer who has nothing worthwhile to offer, but tries to make money by creating fear about useful programs like TM. A previous post of his indicated that he is a disgruntled former TM’er. With any organization that has attracted millions of participants, it is inevitable that a few people will become detractors. While I am impressed that John M. Knapp has shown the resourcefulness to transform his disgruntlement into a career, I do object to him labelling TM as a cult and spamming every article about TM on the Web. Although it is perhaps more worthy of sympathy to see an individual allowing his personal or professional life to revolve around some lingering bitterness, in the interests of fairness I feel I must counter the comments he is leaving.

The Transcendental Meditation technique has helped millions of people and will continue to do so. Its benefits have been validated by hundreds of scientific studies over the past 35 years, many of which were published in peer-reviewed journals. Its efficacy has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health, the premier body overseeing medical research in the US. And it has been introduced into school programs in the US, Canada, Peru, India, South Africa, the UK, and other countries. In the US, TM is taught by a federally-recognized nonprofit organization.

For more information, just Google ‘transcendental meditation’ and you’ll find plenty of good sources.

  4. I just want to echo what’s already been said about John Knapp. I have seen other posts from him before. I don’t know why he’s so down on TM. I’ve been doing Transcendental Meditation for years and its helped me so much. I do it every day on my own. About once a month I go to the TM center for a lecture or meeting and I meet really nice, successful and creative people who are well adjusted, they have careers and stuff. I don’t know where this John Knapp guy gets all this cult mumbo jumbo from.
