Ralph Nader, Others, Predict a Democratic Party Primary Challenge to President Obama — No Comments

  1. I’d say such a candidate has a good chance. Given Obama’s track record in political fights, he’s likely to respond to a challenge by conceding the nomination before the first vote is cast in Iowa and offering to detail his opponent’s car for the remainder of the primary season.

  2. There is a move afoot to draft Bernie Sanders to do the deed. Sanders has also stated recently that Obama needs to be Primaried. This move would serve two purposes for Liberal Democrat Party Loyalists. First it would enable them to challenge Obama’s Policies. But second and just as important it would require Sanders to register into the Democrat Party which would alleviate a long standing irritation that Democrats have had to deal with since Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives. No matter what the outcome of the effort is Liberals would gain points with the Party Power Structure.

There is a big downside to this strategy. A serious Primary Challenger to Obama would send his Big Money Capitalist donors fleeing to the Republican Party to the tune of many 10s of millions of dollars. This in turn would open up Obama to a serious challenge in the General Election. Nader has played coy on the matter saying his chances of running are “highly unlikely”. But highly unlikely is not an unequivalent and emphatic “NO”. If Sanders does take out papers and the economy continues to free fall I would expect Nader o the same if Sanders scores well in the early primaries.

  3. What is your source of information on the “afoot” move? And what “irritation” has Sanders’s independent status caused Democrats? He’s always caucused with them.

  4. question: is Sanders is nbc (natural born citizen)? August 22nd, 2011 the SWP will do the real “deed” by forcing off the 2012 primary and general election ballot (in NYS at the very least) all DNC candidates without both parents being US citizens at the birth of the candidate — wherever the proposed candidate was born.

    — just as Trump has had to prove his mom was a naturized citizen at his birth to be an independent candidate for POTUS and/or RNC candidate, were Bernie’s parents both naturalized citizens at his birth

  5. It’s gonna be all over anyway for Obama next Tuesday at 10am Hawaii time when a federal court-ordered subpoena for production of the physical nonexistent birth certificate is going to have the usurper in handcuffs… along with quite a few other Democrat conspirators. There may not be much of a Democrat party left to even hold a primary after this event. Buckle up!

  6. Hmmm…I just read the latest edition of the Daily Informer and it says that Doremus is full of it.

  7. #4, there is no state that says Sanders can’t run in its Democratic presidential primary unless he is a registered Democrat.

The US Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional right of a party to nominate non-members, and in any event no state ever thought to write any law about how someone is registered, relative to running in a presidential primary.

Neither George H. W. Bush, nor Bill Clinton, nor George W. Bush, was registered in any party, because when they ran they lived in open primary states that don’t have registration by party.

  8. There are actually already a couple of people who have declared their candidacy against President Obama in the Democratic party – but they are on the loony side and will be lucky if they get .005% of the vote. Bernie Sanders might get enough support from disgruntled liberal Democrats to actually get a campaign started. But he will have a problem with mainstream moderate democrats and blue dogs because he is too progressive for their tastes. Whatever Bernie decides to do, it will be interesting to see if anybody else mounts a serious campaign.

  9. Obama mishandling leading to S&P downgrade should be helpful to any DNC challenger.

US Senator DeMint offered the only well vetted sovereign debt credit rating solution (CCB), but a campaign by Bernie Sanders the VT socialist would offer the financial world an interesting counter view point — different from the CIA’s creation Obama.

  10. #10 Texas has affiliation by party. It does not have permanent affiliation by party.

Texas also has a sore loser law for presidential candidates in primaries. And in 2008, the Texas Democratic Party refused to put Dennis Kucinich on the ballot because he refused to sign a oath to support the nominee of the party.

If Sanders were to run in the Democratic primary in Texas, he would have to sign the loyalty oath, and he could not run as an independent candidate.

  11. #16, the reason Kucinich lost the lawsuit is because the oath has no binding effect.

Texas does have affiliation, but it has nothing to do with any voter’s registration card. There is no such thing as a “registered” Republican in Texas, but there is such a thing as a Republican Party member in Texas.

  12. Bernie Sanders, former presidential elector of the Socialist Workers Party, whose hero is 5 time Socialist Party nominee Eugene V. Debs? If he runs, outside of Vermont which he would win, he’d get maybe five percent of the vote per state.

  13. #17 When a voter presents themselves to vote at a primary, their voter registration card is stamped with their affiliation.

I think you are oversimplifying the 5th Circuit’s opinion in the Kucinich case.

  14. I’ll give 5 to 1 odds that Bernie won’t run. Bernie isn’t a Democrat but he’s always been loyal. Bernie won’t break ranks now and I’ll put my money where my mouth is on that proposition.

  15. #20
I like your odds, at least with regards to NYS, once the entire civilized world falls further apart financially and national security wise, everyone and anyone with an independent organization will at least in few choice states petition for ballot access as a candidate for POTUS in 2012 — especially since the ineligible-one may very well no longer a be factor (because he is not a natural born citizen of the USA)

  16. Isn’t it a little late to enter into the titanic party primaries. Draft movements for prospects like Dean, Feingold and Warren were unsuccessful in generating any action.
Would likely be a futile exercise this late.

  17. Daily Kos presented:
Nine Reasons Obama Has Earned a Primary Challenge

    1. Losing the Moment.

    2. A Disdain for Partisanship, Even When Necessary As Party Leader to Defend the Party’s Interests.

    3. Losing…to THESE guys.

    4. Attributing Good Faith to His Enemies–in spite of all the evidence.

    5. The Missing Plan for Fighting Bullies.

    6. A General’s Responsibility for the Demoralization of His Troops.

    7. That “Loss of Confidence” Thing.

    8. Obama’s Future Plans to Defend His Administration’s Gains (and make more).

    9. Countering The New Political Impetus To “Triangulate” Rightward.

  18. We must have a primary presidential challenger or two. Otherwise, the majority of Americans are doomed to a life of extreme hardship or death.Wasn’t 8 years of Bush enough. Look what our fellow Americans are going through now. The writings on the wall. We Dems need a challenger to Obama and Reid. Now!!! Wake up America . Now they want to steal the entitlement programs and make us work longer. We paid into the system all our working lives! We cannot trust Obama again. He has betrayed our trust Big Time last week and will continue to do so with Republicans. We must get rid of Reid, too. Together, they are destroying everything we Dems have worked for-all our lives!!!

  19. Who keeps a record of all of the predictions by various folks — going back about 6,000 plus years ???

When in doubt — make a prediction of whatever ??? Govts, weather, whatever.

  20. A lot of folks denote presidential challenges as PYEAR.

For lots of reasons, including the fascist, establishment Electoral Collage, presidential efforts do not fall under local and state jurisdiction, including poor / sore looser laws!

TR in 1912 and John Anderson in 1980!

  21. Maybe Nader will run with his beloved Peace and Freedom party again…with Cynthia McKinney as VP! Oops, except for the fact that McKinney is busy aiding terrorists. Scratch that one, how about…BRILLIANT! Bernie Sanders as VP! Nader/Sanders for the P&F party would be a nice fit for them. Course, Nader would not be considered a legitimate contender against Obama by the media and would probably get about 5 votes outside of Vermont and Washington.
