Southern Brooklyn Democratic Club Endorses Green Party Nominee in May 5 Special Congressional Election — 8 Comments

  1. It’s a good and very progressive club, but most of the members don’t live in the 11th C.D.; I’m pretty sure most live in either the 9th C.D. (Yvette Clarke’s district) or the 10th C.D. (Jerry Nadler’s district).

Still, the Democrat, Vincent Gentile, has the Working Families ballot line, too, so it’s not as if he’s not progressive.

With the Brooklyn sliver of the district small compared to the Staten Island portion, and this club mostly not even situated there, it’s not going to have much effect on even the Democrats who’ll bother to show up for the special election, which is Staten Island D.A. Daniel Donovan’s (Republican-Conservative-Independence parties) to lose.

  2. The state of New York could very well end up being the canary in the coal mine for the Democratic Party given the rather visible rift that’s developed in the past year or so. As neoliberals within that party continue to call the shots, the progressive base will get more and more disenchanted and will start to back other parties’ candidates more often. Being the largest real progressive/left-libertarian party in the country, the Green Party is well positioned to gain more support as a result of that split. There will of course be claims by the ignorant that the Green Party is “spoiling” elections and splitting the left vote, but to the progressives leaving the Democratic Party, the neoliberals already spoiled the party they were once a part of. Soon there might be significant numbers of Greens in state legislatures, and even a couple of Greens elected to Congress.

  3. What’s a “Neo-Liberal” Joshua? Please compare and contrast it to a “regular” Liberal and to also to a “Progressive?” And please also give examples of “Neo-Liberals” in the Democratic Party?

    Thank you.

  4. I’m curious as well as to how the Greens could be identified as “left-libertarian”?

  5. Richard Grayson, because this is a special election, the Democratic Club members are available as volunteers. There are no elections in the other districts to divide their resources. That makes this endorsement especially important.

  6. Casual Observer, one of the Green Party US 10 Key Values is Decentralization. That along with the other positions would tend to describe the Green Party as left libertarian. Libertarian Socialism is a commonly known political ideology more so in Europe than the US. It’s different than State Socialism. Keep in mind that most countries that have thriving Green Parties have state socialist parties so Greens are decidedly different than that.

  7. “neo-liberal” refers to neoliberal classical economics. Politically neoliberals in the Democratic Party are the “New Democrats “. Pro free trade, pro austerity pro deregulation of financial institutions etc. Hillary Clinton is abprime example.
