Alberta Elects a New Democratic Party Majority to Legislature for First Time

On May 5, Alberta held an election for the provincial legislature. For the first time, the New Democratic Party won a majority in that body. See this story. The Alberta government been controlled by the Social Credit Party 1935-1971 and by the Progressive Conservative Party ever since, until today’s election. Thanks to Rick Kissell for the link.

  1. The chart which is part of the article shows that 4 parties and 1 independent won seats in the new provincial parliament.
    For a few years now, the NDP – supplanting the Liberals – has been one of the two “major” parties in Canada after many years as one of its “minor” parties. Nice that Canada’s system and society, despite having “first past the post” elections as do we, can still foment opportunity for “third” parties to gain seats, persist and rise to major party status.
