Texas held local non-partisan elections on May 9, a Saturday. In Aubrey, Libertarian Party member Calvin Tillman was elected to the city council, place 4. The incumbent wasn’t running for re-election. Tillman defeated his only opponent by 147-87. Aubrey is north of Dallas and has a population of 2,595. I congratulate the candidate! Don’t know if he used the “Libertarian” label with his literature/signs, etc., but hope that if such was allowed by law, he did. One way 3rd party candidates can take advantage of these non-partisan elections is by using their party label or emblem. Of course, it would be up to each campaign, and the party/candidate would have to determine if such would be detrimental or helpful.
Many voters do not even know about 3rd parties. By using the non-partisan election, they can “educate” the voters that there is other choices beside Democrat or Republican. Be innovative. Take advantage of every opportunity to get our 3rd party message out.
