On June 16, Donald Trump said he will seek the Republican presidential nomination. That makes 16 Republicans seeking the nomination who are generally considered to have the qualifications to be recognized by the national Republican Committee.

The reason the blog post says 16 is it includes Governors Scott Walker, John Kasich, Bobby Jindal, and Chris Christie. Those four haven’t formally announced yet but everyone expects them to do so. The twelve who have formally announced are Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, Rick Perry, Lindsay Graham, George Pataki, Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz.
Donald Trump said he was “…running for President.” I assume he’s running as a Republican; but he didn’t say so. I am wondering if he’s keeping his options open if he would later want to run as an independent or third-party candidate; if he doesn’t get the nomination. There was some discussion on a viewer call-in show about this on C-SPAN3 after Trump’s speech.

you’re right. I just read the transcript of his speech and he doesn’t mention that he is seeking the Republican nomination.
