New York Has Approximately 30 Declared Write-in Presidential Candidates; List Still Isn’t Final

New York is among the majority of states that counts presidential write-ins for candidates who filed a declaration of candidacy. The deadline for that was Tuesday, October 18. The State Board of Elections will post the list early next week. It still isn’t final, because declarations only had to be postmarked by October 18 and it is possible some more will arrive in the postal mail this week. Among the 30 who have already filed are Evan McMullin and Rocky De La Fuente.

New York has never before had nearly so many declared write-in presidential candidates. New York only requires a single candidate for presidential elector; the state does not require a full slate. That means it is easier to file in New York than in many other states.

  1. Hmmm. Any States that REQUIRE a posting in precincts of declared write-in candidates (to perhaps reduce name spelling errors) ???

    If YES, than one more ego trip for the folks on the list.

  5. Demo-Rep–I’ve been voting since 1978 and have seen a listing of write-in candidates for president at the polling place only twice. 1996, Indiana, and 2012, Kentucky.

  6. I don’t know if California requires a listing of write-in candidates at the polling place but I do remember listings at the polling places when I lived in Sacramento County. I now live in a different county and this last June at the primary there was no listing nor could I find anything on the County’s election site. I arrived at the polling place soon after it opened asked if there was a list of write-ins. I wanted to write in a Libertarian for the state assembly and I wanted to be sure I spelled his name correctly. One of the poll workers got on the phone to the county elections office and within minutes a fax with the names of all qualified write-ins (there were several) for that precinct was sent and posted for all to see.

  7. Eric L California’s deadline for filing a Write-in Candidate’s list of Electors is October 25th. I would imagine a public list would not be available until November 1st or so.

    I don’t get your response to me. As I mentioned in my post I was describing what happened at the primary election here in California last June; not the upcoming general election in November.
