Ohio Supreme Court Won’t Put Libertarian Party on the Ballot

On January 20, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled 6-1 that the fact that Gary Johnson got more than 3% of the vote in Ohio in November 2016 does not create a new ballot-qualified party.

  1. Surprise surprise. Only the lone Democrat voted in favor.
    Why I don’t vote Republican.

  2. They literally screwed the party out of ballot access even though, from what I read, they earned the right to to access. Complete disgrace.

  3. Maybe I’m being dim, but could someone explain the majority’s decision at to what it takes for a group to establish a political party, if it can’t be a political party until after the election? What step did the Johnson supporters miss?

    They used the independent candidate petition instead of the party petition.

  5. Jeremy, the party status petition requires way more signatures than the independent candidate petition. It was not realistic for the LP and/or the Johnson campaign to complete the party status petition under the circumstances that were in place at that time.

  6. Correct. Ohio sucks. But that’s why the court didn’t and never was going to put the LP on the ballot.
