New Mexico Land Commissioner Switches Registration from Republican to Libertarian

New Mexico elects a statewide partisan office called Land Commissioner, in midterm years. The incumbent Republican Land Commissioner, Aubrey Dunn, has just announced that he has switched his registration from Republican to Libertarian. See this story. Thanks to Rick Lass for the link.

This is the first time any statewide elected official in a partisan office has ever been registered in the Libertarian Party.

  1. It is technically called “Commissioner of Public Lands”. Dunn has been on the outs with the ruling faction of the Repubs for years, and the Libs are gearing up for a strong slate of executive branch offices, since they became a Major Party this election, due to Gary Johnson’s Presidential vote tally exceeding 5% last election. Johnson had been a Repub Gov in NM from 1994-2002.

Stay tuned to BAN for more developments!

  2. Republicans and Democrats are switching to the Libertarian party all across the country. Great news!

  3. How exciting! I know that NH is supposed to be the “libertarian” state, but I could definitely see their party growing some heavy roots in the Southwest.

  4. I’m shocked this hasn’t generated more buzz. I’ve seen it posted here, on the LNC email list, on independentpoliticalreport, and on 3 on subreddit boards. Those 6 postings have generated a combined 11 comments, including this one. And it’s not on lp.org.

  5. COPL- Constitutional or mere law office ???

If mere law office, then how many seconds until it gets wiped out ???
