This is great news.
This is bad news.
If national popular voting for president becomes law, defensive voting (voting for the lesser of two evils rather than the candidate with whom you agree most) will become the rule in Presidential elections. Protest votes for candidates like Perot, Johnson and others will cease.
Don, it’s not like a majority of U.S. voters don’t already erroneously think that you’re an idiot if you vote third party, or get extremely angry at you for refusing to support whatever garbage candidate their party decided to force down our throats, so what exactly would be different?
The idea of an Electoral College is something I just find disgusting. It’s 100% anti-democratic, and has no place at all in a modern election system. Furthermore, I’d still happily vote third-party if such a plan was passed, and for those who hold true to their principles, whatever they may be, will likely continue voting third-party as well.
Also, I disagree that all third-party votes for president are “protest” votes, it’s, as you yourself said, voting for the person you most agree with. That’s not a protest vote in any way I’d define it. There were nine candidates in 2016 who had enough ballot access to theoretically win the electoral college, as as far as I’m concerned, anyone voting for one of those nine people did not cast a “protest” vote.
