This NPR story says the traditional exit poll will probably no longer be carried out in the United States. Instead there will be more pre-election polling just days before the election, to capture information about the millions of persons who vote early, and also to account for the fact that more conservative voters are less willing to cooperate with exit pollsters.

Exit polling is done without spoken communication. The exit pollster asks voters who are leaving the polls to fill out a piece of paper revealing whom they voted for, and information about their democraphic categories (age etc.). Then the voter drops the piece of paper into a “ballot box” and so the information is secret.
NOT so in many other regimes — only spoken nosiness.

I guess when the exit polls started not adding up to the given vote totals, and Jill Stein’s recounts began turning up some questionable figures, they had to get rid of exit polls and make recounts almost impossible to do. Where are the international organizations and countries condemning and not recognizing the results of our elections? Because 2016 should have been as clear a signal as ever (the harsh ballot access laws and other systemic rigging notwithstanding) that our elections are not free and fair. Cowards and inconsistent applications of democratic principles abound…

I find myself agreeing with Demo Rep. We the people are subjected to months of campaign drivel and bombarded with all sorts of negative and outright annoying ads and I guess the political elites figure that is okay. I think we should go back to paper ballots and if it takes a week after election day to know who won then what is the problem? Let the politicians wait! They make of suffer so why can’t they wait for a result a few extra days? Besides, with paper ballots there is actually something to recount! Who really needs “instant” results? It’s like instant coffee… not as good as the real thing!

If conservative voters won’t participate with exit pollsters, I don’t know why they would be any more cooperative with pre-election pollsters. And that seems to be the case. The pre-election polls were just as wrong as the exit polls and Trump wasn’t the only Republican for whom pre-election polls underestimated support.
Also, this effort by Fox/AP wasn’t any more accurate in 2017 than the normal way. They haven’t fixed the problem.
The article says most of the companies that participate in the exit poll are under contract through 2020, so it will at least be done through then.
