On September 14, an IHeartMedia-KFI-KNBC poll was released for the California Insurance Commissioner race. It shows independent Steve Poizner with 34%, Democrat Ricardo Lara at 27%, and undecided at 39%. If Poizner wins, he will be the first independent candidate in history to have won statewide office in California. Thanks to Politico for this news.

I’m surprised that’s an elected office. In most states, at least as I understand it, the Insurance Commissioner is appointed by the governor. Richard, in how many states is it an elected office? Thanks.

California didn’t elect its Insurance Commissioner in the past, but an initiative in 1988 made it an elected partisan position.
When Poizner previously held this office he was a Republican. Is it know why he left Republican Party to become an independent? or his he still really a Republican camoflauged as an “independent” in order to have a better chance at election?
Where is the voter petition for PR and AppV in CA ???

I think Poizner is running as an independent because he thinks he is more likely to win than if he ran as a Republican.
I think Poizner has also indicated that he doesn’t believe Insurance Commissioner should be a partisan position.
If the current SOS were competent and not a political hack who was term limited out of the legislature, we could check when Poizner changed his registration.

With regard to petition for AppV, no way. We are opposed to all single winner districts and all voting except Hagnebach-Bischoff method.
We are in process of launching a new Elector list of 55 names in California and possibly national, a system exactly like the 10th USA Parliament.
