Gary Johnson Had Coattails for Other New Mexico Libertarian Candidates in 2018

Gary Johnson was the Libertarian nominee for U.S. Senate from New Mexico this year, and he polled 15.38%.  It is clear that the Johnson Senate campaign also boosted the vote totals for other New Mexico Libertarian candidates in 2018.  The party polled 4.98% for U.S. House in the New Mexico districts that it contested.  That was the best showing in the nation for Libertarians for U.S. House, except that in Utah, the lone Libertarian for U.S. House polled 5.00%.

New Mexico Libertarians had not even run for U.S. House since 1996, when the single nominee polled 2.21%, so 2018 was quite a change for New Mexico Libertarian involvement in U.S. House elections.

Also, the New Mexico Libertarian Party had three nominees for statewide state executive positions.  It polled 5.00% for Secretary of State, 4.76% for Attorney General, an 5.77% for Land Commissioner.  Again, these were the best showings for Libertarians for statewide state offices anywhere in the nation in 2018, except that in Montana the Libertarian nominee for Clerk of the State Supreme Court received 5.99%.  Also, for purposes of this blog post, all Libertarians running in races with only one major party opponent are excluded.  Without that exclusion, the best Libertarian state for U.S. House would have been Washington, where a Libertarian running against a Democrat, and no other opponents, received 28.71%.

  1. LP PERSONS IN POWER OFFICES —

THE ROT CONTINUES — PENDING CIVIL WAR II / WORLD WAR III / GREAT DEPRESSION III.

2006-2012 WAS GREAT DEPRESSION II FOR THE CLUELESS.

PR AND APPV – PENDING CONDORCET

  2. That top showing against an R&D for US House is down from previous years. Had to go back to 2006 to find one that low.

    2016 8.14%
    2014 7.68%
    2012 6.64%
    2010 8.05%
    2008 6.92%
    2006 5.08%

  3. It should be mentioned that Gary Johnson served as New Mexico’s governor from 1995 to 2003 (as a Republican) before becoming the Libertarian nominee for president in 2012 and 2016.

  4. The United Coalition USA’s goal quadruple our numbers on internal Libertarian Party elections while protecting every Elector’s liberty to self-catgorize.

Bringing the Gary Johnson Republicans was a missed opportunity.

The one Party is bringing the outline, Bylaw 12, to the California LP in Concord April 5th, 2019.

The first step is that us men must bring our opposite gender ahead of our own.

  5. As a New Mexico voter I was particularly pained by the LP nominee for Congress in the 1st District. I watched him debate his two female major party opponents (there… take THAT, Ogle!)on three occasions and could NOT tell he was a libertarian nor that he was the Libertarian Party nominee. I rarely pass up an opportunity to vote FOR a Libertarian but in this case I did.

  6. To clarify, these improved guidelines would be fine for California, Texas and New York.

But for the rest of USA census, like New Mexico, the groupings may change in 2020 within the twelve population balanced super-states (ss 1 to 12).

Twelve being a lunar cycle for easier scheduling, one month for each super-state (and twelve mini-states too). The number twelve works fine.

For the PPR Electoral College guidelines fit, the group might be zona, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Utah (ss10).

We are signing up Elector’s now from across the USA.

  7. New Mexico is in with Nebraska, from where the one woman who filed as candidate, Heather Horst.

Sorry for typo, Arizona is one which is currently grouped with New Mexico.

We won’t know of any changes in gououbgs of states until after 2020 census.

As a final note, this applies to a plan which is meant to be unbiased towards all political parties, but only two are elected Prez/VP, and one (or both) might be a registered Libertarian.

  8. Jim, you are right about the Kansas 2nd district, but this blog post isn’t comparing individual races against each other. It compares states against each other. In Kansas 2018, the Libertarian candidates for US House (in districts which had a Libertarian) got 3.90%. The other Kansas candidate, in the 3rd district, pulled the Kansas percentage down.

  9. There is a difference between picking only Libertarians verses picking a candidate who is best for the team.

The Libertarian Party bosses (and all parties’ bosses) want you to think that there is only one party to choose from.

In the bigger picture, sometimes we need to consider all the alternatives, and by protecting equal treatment above everything may demonstrate good teamwork and build trust for the good of the whole.
