Rumors Circulate About Late-Announcing Presidential Candidates for Libertarian and Green Parties

There are unconfirmed rumors that Congressman Justin Amash has become a dues-paying life member of the Libertarian Party and that he will seek the party’s presidential nomination.  There are also rumors that former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura may seek the Green Party presidential nomination.

The last time that either the Democratic Party or the Republican Party nominated someone for president who had not declared as late as April of the election year was 1952, when the Democratic Party nominated Adlai Stevenson at its July 21-26 convention.  He had not desired to be a presidential candidate, and had said so clearly.  But he gave the welcoming speech at the Democratic Chicago convention, because he was the host Governor, and his speech was received so well, delegates insisted that he run.  He did not want to run against General Dwight Eisenhower, but at the convention he agreed to do so.

  5. It’s only a rumor that Amash has even joined the LP much less that he’s running for its nomantion.

  6. Hyperbole about Democrats being communists aside, it’s not surprising that they lost to war hero General Eisenhower. A more interesting question is whether they legitimately won in 1960. Illinois and Texas in particular draw suspicions of widespread fraud that year.

  20. Ventura said he isn’t running but will support the Green nominee. My question is since when is Jesse Ventura a Green? When he was Governor and part of the Minnesota Independence Party he pushed centrism. He pushed it in his book and on just about every interview he did.

    Why would he now support a party that thinks the Dems aren’t sufficiently left? Usually adults of Ventura’s age don’t have that radical of a change in views at that point in their life.

  30. Not everyone is left, right or middle. In fact we’re not on that spectrum at all and far from muddled. We don’t care if it’s a left boot or a right boot, we want it off our necks. We don’t care if democrats or republicans win, they’re both two sides of the same rotten penny.

  34. I don’t get the sense that he’s a troll, as in doing it for the lulz. I think he genuine feels strongly about the stuff he writes. He is, however, a crank. He doesn’t care if he persuades anyone, or even if people understand him. Indeed, the very fact that people ignore his advice makes him feel superior, that everyone else is a moron. He also catastrophizes constantly, and thrives on repetition and jargon – internal brain loops, similar to OCD (or an actual manifestation of it). It isn’t surprising that his writing is replete with impending or existing war and tyranny, gloom and doom, all caps and multiple exclamation points. It’s the end of the world, and no one is listening to his genius solutions. Rinse, lather, repeat. I suppose it gives a lonely old man something to do, so what’s the harm? I’m done trying to engage him though, as he has made clear he hasn’t any interest in actual dialogue.

    Being a Libertarian would make a lot more sense. He basically was libertarianish as a Governor. He pushed fiscal conservatism and social progressivism. The Green Party is the opposite of fiscal conservatism. I am curious when Ventura switched his views on fiscal policy.

  38. He’s always been complex on that. Even as governor he branded himself “teachers pet” for lavish school spending. He was also big on spending state money on light rail.
