Libertarian Party Nominates Spike Cohen for Vice-President — 135 Comments

  1. Terrible choice unless you hate the LP and want it to lose badly. Spike Cohen is a neo con and, according to Robert Milnes, a potential Mossad agent.

  2. This was a racist action by the LP. You basically called John Monds a n*****.

  3. You all just spat in Jorgensen’s face. You all deserve to lose badly. You’ll be lucky to get Badnarik level support.

  4. Any evidence that Spike Cohen is a neo-con, or is the above a non-serious troll post?

  5. They should have nominated a woman for veep. That would have been the ONLY chance to differentiate from all other chatter.

  6. I know someone who tried to tell that to one of the other female candidates to drop out and run for VP but she refused because she thought it was her destiny to be elected president in 2020.

  7. I missed part of the VP debate. Can you tell me at what minute of the debate he allegedly said this? Also, if he did say it, did he say he used to be a neo-con, but is not anymore?

  8. He said it early on. As I see it, once a neo con always a neo con. You’d have to have been really dumb to buy into their bullshit about invading countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Syria and installing “democracy.” That’s what he believed and now he’s the LP VP nominee.

Please don’t tell me you voted for him Andy.

  9. He was a cheerleader for the Iraq War. Where was Jorgensen during the war? Do we even have any idea if she opposed it or not?

  10. I voted for John Monds for VP after Kokesh was eliminated. I am not sure if Monds is better or not, but I met Monds and talked to him for awhile at the LP of CA State Convention earlier this year. He seemed like a good fellow. I also know that Monds ran for office 4 times in Georgia, and did relatively well (by LP standards).

  11. I think this is going to end up being one of those years where the two major party candidates combined get about 98 percent of the vote or more.

  12. @Howie – You could be right if various ballot access lawsuits aren’t successful. Is there ANY petitioning even going on at the moment? Richard?

  13. So here’s the party messages to the African American community:

Democrats: “if you even think about voting for someone else, you an Uncle Tom, you a house nigger, you ain’t even black! You better stay in line and stay on the plantation.”

Libertarians: “we ain’t having no nappy headed nigger as our nominee. Give us Barabbas! We’d rather have a neo con than a nasty nigger!”

    Great job Libertarians.

  14. The two major parties are actually the GP 27% and the CP 27%.
    Dems and reps 17% each.
LP 13%. The Libertarian Vote /Cato Institute.
    Reform/Alliance x%.

  15. I guess the LP is headed back to the minor leagues.

    Will Jorgensen/Cohen 2020 manage to outpoll Browne/Jorgensen ’96?

  16. Cody,
Put on your PLAS tinfoil hat and your anti Duverger’s Law goggles
and you will see GP 27%, CP 27%.
    Dems and reps 17% each.
    LP 13%.
The Libertarian Vote/Cato Institute is 13%.

  17. Trump has sucked the life out of the CP.
Top Ten/Six would level the playing field
    from dem-rep near 50/50
    To dem -rep 17% each
    GP-CP 27% each
    LP 13%.
    PLAS GP 27% + LP 13% = 40%. Dems 30% reps 30%
    Anti PLAS CP 27% + LP 13% =40%. Dems 30% reps 30%.
This is a tip to you.
Don’t say I never gave you anything.

Like I said above, I voted for Monds. Whether that was good or bad remains to be seen.

Maybe Spike Cohen used to have those views, but maybe he changed them upon getting more information and reflecting upon them. I doubt Vermin Supreme would have picked him as his preferred running mate if he was in favor of foreign warmongering.

I don’t agree with Spike’s view on immigration, but I don’t agree with Jo Jorgensen’s “let everybody in who wants to come here” position either. Like I have said many times before, while government exists the government is acting as a property manager for the existing population, and advocating that there be no limits or restrictions on immigration is an assault on the property rights of the existing population, and is also against preferences of the vast majority of the population.

Spike said that traveling or immigrating from another country into the USA should be no different than an American citizen traveling or moving to a different state. Even if we lived in an ananrcho-capitalist society, there’d still be private property borders and various entrance to property policies with which to deal, so his example does not really fly there, unless we were talking about places that were unclaimed. Reality is that we live in a world that is divided into states (or countries), and every state in the world regulates its borders as well as migration/immigration into that country. The US Constitution clearly delegates this function to the federal (or national) government, under the “Law of Nations” clause, as well as under the “naturalization” clause. as well as under the “repel an invasion” clause. American citizens, as well as the 50 states, plus DC and the federal territories, are all supposed to operate under the US Constitution, and part of the agreement is to have reciprocity among the 50 states and DC and the federal territories, that is that American citizens can travel and move about through the 50 states and DC and US territories. This does not apply to non-citizens, who must enter through a legal port of entry, and who are not guaranteed entry, or American citizenship, as the criteria for entry and citizenship are set forth the the US Congress. I understand that in an ideal world this function would not be handled by a coercive state, but we do not live in an ideal world, and even if we did live in an ideal world, nobody would be guaranteed access to every piece of property, nor would anyone be able to move into any piece of property which they desire. Private property owners, or associations of private property, such as in a condominium association, would make these decisions.

Even though I disagree with Spike’s comments and position on immigration, he sounded good on other issues on which I heard him comment.

Jo and Spike sound like they are the best ticket that the LP has had since 2004 from an issues and philosophical standpoint. I don’t think that they are ideal, but let’s see what they can do.

  19. “Maybe Spike Cohen used to have those views, but maybe he changed them upon getting more information and reflecting upon them.”

How is that any different than Bob Barr or Bill Weld? Why do you believe in the sincerity of his conversion but not theirs?

  20. Egyptian God: It is possible for people to change their thinking. Before I joined the Libertarian Party in 1992 I was a Socialist member of the Democratic Party. After I joined the LP I read Ayn Rand, Murray Rothbard, and a myriad of others and stopped being a Socialist.

I have never heard of Spike Cohen before today, but I trust the judgment of the delegates to the Libertarian National Convention. I am happily looking forward to voting Jorgensen Cohen in November.

  21. To actively be a neo con and support neo con causes you either have to be incredibly dense or devious. Neither of those are good options.

  22. Bob Barr and Bill Weld were both lying, weasel politicians who held elected office.

I am not aware of Spike Cohen ever having held elected office. Lots of people who become libertarians formerly held views that were not libertarian. Time Will tell whether or not this holds true with Spike.

  23. It’s too bad that the California State LP used one-party system for introduction because local California Presidential candidates never got any respect, equal time and equal treatment.

We’re bringing the correct math for pure proportional, the 539-party system to the 538-member Electoral College, in 2020.

    Libertarian One 2020
    http://Www.pprelectoralcollege.com

  24. “Only political figures that have achieved success lie, anyone who hasn’t won a single office does not lie” – Andy

  25. Brandon, I never said that only people who have held political office lie. Yes, anyone can lie.

The difference is that it is a politicians job to honor their oath of office by adhering to the Constitution. Most of the general public knows little about the Constitution, or politics in general. Lots of people have stupid or uninformed views. Many people are taught bad ideas by tge education system and the big media, and in a lotvof cases, even their families. So most people do not start their political journey as libertarians.

I hold an elected politicians to a higher set of standards than I hold the general public.

  26. No, Spike Cohen is not a neocon, he is an anarchist.

@Howie Hawkins, if that is indeed you, I agree. Ballot access isn’t looking great, and Dr. Jorgensen is a thoroughly uninspiring candidate. And with all due respect, I do not see Hawkins getting particularly big numbers either.

  27. Spike Cohen is a self proclaimed neo con. That’s already been proven above from the VP debate. Please do some research and stop lying to the readers here.

  28. Our team never got to debate all national candidates because the LNC uses the one-party system of two tokens per delegate.

Our team insists on limited voting, the three-party system (one token for two seats = three-party system), but they fixed it so the insider big guys would always win in the one-party system they imposed.

  29. Spike Cohen said he was a neo-con 15 years ago. I know almost nothing about him, but my bigger concern is that he seems like he’d be the sort to slip into unprofessional trolling behavior at any minute. I don’t expect that “Egyptian God” would share that concern.

I forget about Jo Jorgensen the instant she stops speaking and her talking points are 25 years out of date.

This is going to be a bad year for the LP. By ‘bad’ I mean I expect about 1 million votes and high single digit percentage growth in voter registrations.

  30. There will probably be 625,000 – 650,000 registered libertarians just in the 30 or so states that register libertarians by party by election time. Add in an equal rate for the other 20 states and 1 million looks like it should be close to the floor. I just don’t see people who psychologically are at the level where they will take the time to register Libertarian (or are at the level where they would do so, if their state allowed it) caring enough about blocking Trump or blocking Biden to strategically vote for one or the other. They don’t care who wins. They probably won’t care about Jorgensen, either, but they’ll vote for the party just to register their displeasure with the Rs and Ds.

Amash, I think, would have gotten 2.5 – 4 million, unless he made the debates. So 1 million is a big step down. I don’t think Jorgensen will be able to get voters who aren’t willing to register L (or would do so), but she won’t lose them, either.

  31. What do NV gamblers predict for Nov 2020 ???

esp for the LP Prez/VP ???

    —-
Pct of EX-Donkeys vs EX-Elephants vs EX-others in the current LP membership ???

    —-
Any LP clubby 2020 convention stuff remaining ???

Another crop of dubious LNC clubby folks ??? —

doing about ZERO to get statist laws repealed and LP laws enacted ???

  32. Jim, I expect the LP’s presidential ticket to go down as well. Part of the reason being due to the market conditions being more difficult this year, but also due to a weak ticket in terms of name recognition and money. Jo and Spike have such low name recognition that even a lot of LP members did not know who they were a year ago. People who are in the LP back in the 1990’s remember Jo from her ’96 VP run, but she basically disappeared from political activism after that ’96 campaign, and only resurfaced recently to run for President, so a lot of people who joined the LP after her VP run had no idea who she was.

  33. Should read, “I expect the LP’s presidential ticket vote total to go down as well…”

  34. Question for Spike: In the unfortunate event that during the Presidential Debates, Respectable Jo accidentally sips on Joe Biden’s Slurpee, are you prepare to… well… you know… seize the Ring, as it were? P.S. I like cheezy bread. Yum.

  35. ^That’s the kind of riff raff Spike Cohen attracts. Sounding more and more like a Mossad op.

  36. It’s pretty appalling that the convention didn’t nominate the VP candidate Jorgensen asked them to. He is a card carrying Libertarian and by all accounts a nice guy. It’s almost like there is something else about him they didn’t like.

  37. I voted for John Monds for VP in the last two rounds, but I did this not because of Jorgensen, but rather because he seemed like the best option out of the available choices.

LP delegates can vote for whoever they want in each round, including NOTA, and I think that is a goid thing.

I would have preferred it at the previous three LP presidential nominating conventions if the delegates had not given Barr, and then Johnson, their choices for VP.

  38. I do not think that was what is was. Spike was backed by Vermin Supreme, plus, a lot of people who backed Hornberger, and Kokesh, got behind Spike, because Spike is a self identified anarchist (even though Hornberger is not an anarchist, some of his supporters are).

Monds is a pretty strong libertarian, but I do not think he is an anarchist, or at least I never heard him say that.

I decided to vote for Monds over Spike because, a) I talked to Monds for awhile, probably an hour, at the LP of CA State Convention earlier this year, and he seemed like a good fellow, b) I know that he’s been in the LP for at least 15 years, and had run for office 4 times, and did better than average for an LP candidate at least two of those times, and c) I was less familiar with Spike, and although I saw enough to know that he’s articulate, some of the stuff I saw from him and his partnership with Vermin looked goofy/silly, and even if it was “tongue in cheek,” I am not sure how many voters would be able, or take the time, to overlook the goofiness/silliness.

  39. It is hard to be taken seriously when you nominate Vermin Supreme’s runningmate for VP. If there is any media attention, it is for that and it is mentioned as a joke. Seriously, the perception of the LP right now is that there is some major racism. I have to admit, I don’t think it is just perception. I think consciously or (even more likely) subconsciously, that factored into the delegates’ decision. Shame on them.

  40. I voted for Kokesh in the 1st round for President and Vice President. After he got eliminated for President, I had a difficult time deciding for whom to cast my vote. I figured it would go multiple rounds, and get down to Hornberger and Jorgensen. My main priority after Kokesh was out was to stop Jim Gray from winning, but after Gray’s vote total in the first round it was apparent that he’d be out by the 3rd round, which is what happened. I decided to back Hornberger over Jorgensen because he has done a lot more activism over the last 22 or 23 years, during which time Jorgensen had disappeared. Also, Hornberger being backed by the Mises Caucus (who I want to help), and the fact that Hornberger is at least somewhat of a “conspiracy guy” (he has written about the Kennedy assassination, and talked about Waco, Ruby Ridge, Pearl Harbor, and the Gulf of Tonkin, and he has also made abolishing the CIA a big issue), also played a role in my deciding to vote for him over Jorgensen (I do not know where Jorgensen stands on “conspiracy theories”/I can still vote for a candidate who is not a “conspiracy” person, if they are good on issues, but I find “conspiracy” deniers to be naive,
so at least Hornberger is not completely naive, although his immigration stance is naive, but so is Jorgensen’s immigration stance), also helped shift me to Hornberger over Jorgensen. I figured that it would go a few rounds before it got down to Horberger vs Jorgensen, so once Gray was out, I figured it would be “safe” to vote for somebody other than Hornberger for at least a couple of rounds, so I voted for John Monds for rounds 2 and 3. When the 4th round came I figured it was time to play it “safe” so I voted for Hornberger. I was surprised it did not go to a 5th round.

I do NOT dislike Jorgensen. My main reasons for not voting for her was due to her disappearing for over 2 decades and her lack of name recognition (which is even lower than Hornberger’s, and Hornberger’s name recognition is pretty low).

  41. I do not believe that the delegates not nominating John Monds had anything to do with racism (I bet John Monds does not think this either). Monds had a good showing for both. If he had launched his campaign earlier and campaigned more aggressively he might have won. Also, the guy who beat him for VP is Jewish.

  42. Should read, “Monds had a good showing for both President and Vice President.”

  43. Cody Quirk- Racism against African Americans has historically been the biggest blemish on America. The history of slavery, followed by Jim Crow does not apply to any other groups. If this was Europe, you might have a point.

  44. Cody, have you read my Amicus Curiae Brief? Go to The PLAS Place and put on your Counter PLAS tin foil hat and Duverger’s Law goggles. Which you evidently have not done.
I actually am shocked by your cluelessness about politics.
Kind of like I was when Tom Knapp dumped me and PLAS even before I named it.
I could not believe it when he said the progressive vote plus the libertarian vote would be about 1+1+2%!!!!!
Ummmm, no, Tom. More like 27% + 13%=40%. I’m actually hoping for 42%.
My Brief has been sent to the US District Court for Western PA-Pittsburgh.
I have no idea what is going to happen with it.
Brief, briefly, Israel is an apartheid, theocratic, counterrevolutionary terrorist state. Stolen from the Palestinians. Worldwide the jews zealously support Israel. Therefore the jews are international terrorists, much like ISIL.
Bowers has the affirmative defense of self defense and the defense of others.

  45. You had three black candidates and a Jew. You rejected the all 3 blacks. Sharpe – forced to drop out. Armstrong – rejected. Monds – basically called a n***** and replaced with someone less qualified and less libertarian just because that person had lighter skin. Jewish is not a race. Many of the merchants with ships coming with slaves from Africa were Jews.

  46. Ken Armstrong is black??? I must not have been paying close enough attention, because I missed that.

If so, he must have a lot of white ancestry.

He seemed like a good fellow. I had never heard of him until a few months ago.

  47. Many, probably most, Jews do consider themselves to be a race. Many of them are mixed with other things thougb; such as with a lot of European ancestries (Russian, German, Polish, etc…).

  48. Quirk is a complete MORON who doesn’t know what the word “basically” means. He also doesn’t know what “pseudo-science” is and doesn’t know anything about genetics.

We do not know from where the modern Jews descended. Zionists with a political bias say ancient Israelites. Some say central Asia. Genetic testing showed that the Canaanites who were in the area before the Israelites have their descendants in modern day Lebanon.

  49. Egyptian God’s comment from May 25, 2020 at 4:58 pm. Modern European Jews of all kinds descend from Israelites 2000 years ago, not from Central Asians 2000 years ago. Ashkenazi Jewish Cohens like this year’s Libertarian VP candidate Spike Cohen usually descend from Middle Eastern paternal lines within the Y-DNA haplogroup family J. Meanwhile, my non-Cohen Ashkenazi Jewish paternal line is a branch of E-Z830, which was found among the ancient Natufians more than 10,000 years ago, indigenous to Israel, and my genetic matches on that line include Syrians and Arabians. This is not a political issue but a scientific issue.

At the same time, Andy on May 25, 2020 at 4:54 pm was correct that there is some German and Polish ancestry in Ashkenazim, too. However, it’s far less than the amount of Israelite ancestry.

  50. I meant to finish my sentence that Egyptian God’s comment from May 25, 2020 at 4:58 pm *is misleading*.

  51. Armstrong said he is white in the vp debate which followed the Stossel debate.

  52. Cody,
Present day US population jews 2%.
    Blacks @12%.
Just because I dare to discuss Judaism and the Israel/Zionist problem it does not necessarily follow that I am anti-Semitic.
Are you flying a false flag?
I thought you were a right wingnut. Now you say you are a libertarian? When/how did this change take place?

  53. Any pictures of the cast of candidates and their trolls ???

  55. Robert Milnes, who do you think “Egyptian God” is?

Could it be a guy who used to live in Maryland, West Virginia, and Missouri, and now lives in New Jersey, possibly not too far away from you?

  56. LOL! Everybody who lives in NJ lives not too far away from me!
Who is this wandering neighbor of mine?
I think Egyptian God is Nathan Norman. But I do not know who Nathan Norman is.
Pandemo Rep, no, that is not the jist of my amicus brief.
That is that Israel is an apartheid, theocratic, counterrevolutionary terrorist state. Worldwide the jews zealously
support Israel, therefore the jews are international terrorists.
paulie and Spike (LOL!) Cohen are jews. But it does not necessarily follow that they are spies and/or saboteurs of the LP for Israel.
That would require an investigation to determine that.

    Ergo, while

  68. The Green party is rapidly facing a virtually certain loss -again by its presidential ticket. Which it ALWAYS has. Virtually ALL down ticket ballots lose also. BY HUGE margins. It is VIRTUALLY ALWAYS not even close. ALL other third parties also.

Yes that is an accurate quote from his legal brief submitted to the court. You can click on his name and scroll down a bit, he has it posted on his blog which his name links to. This is far from the first time he has made these kinds of statements.

  72. I hope Spike reads this…so Hello, Spike…

It’s *mouser* from FF. *timmY* told me you were running as the LP VP. That is hilarious. You know if your comments from FF ever see the light of day you will be trashed. This truly is an Epic Troll…keep up gods work my friend.

  73. Hi, I’m Mike, I’ll vote for Spike with my friend Ike. Some haters above don’t like Spike and say he’s a dirty *ike. I hope they go take a hike on a freeway pike or get all revved up and go fall off a bike.

  74. “What’s ff? Any place the rest of is can see them?”

It’s called F*ckFrance. A defunct website that Spike Cohen was a member of. *lol* He doesn’t want that to come out.

I’ll vote for Spike though…because he is just trolling you.

  75. Did this anti-France website have something to do with France not supporting the invasion of Iraq? I recall there being calls in Congress to ban french fries from the Capitol cafeteria at the time over this.

If so, perhaps this was in Spike’s neo-con days, which he has said he evolved out of being.

  76. Yeah, it was a reaction site to the second Iraqi war. There were many members from around the world, and it was a free speech site. So words were not restricted. We had a number of french members along with the UK, Germany, Belgium, Italy, etc…

  77. “And just why is this a big deal?”

It’s not to me, but the Media will rape him from being a member of that site. You can’t have free speech my friend, because someone might be insulted.

  78. Are you retarded or something? Because he is the VP candidate of the LP party. Are you sure you are a Libertarian?

Usually they can think things through.

  79. They don’t give half a shit. The whole story of the L.P. nomination got barely half a dozen mostly small time news stories this year. CNN didn’t even bother to do a news story, just an opinion piece about how the L.P. are spoilers. Fox said they probably won’t even be spoilers and along with the Washington times pointed out the presidential candidate is a grandmother. After that you have a few local news stories. That’s about it. As for spike he got one dismissive article at reason.com . No one cares. He already said he used to be a neocon so that’s not even news here much less msm.

  80. What Wyatt said… Mouser! ALSO… Spike is such an attention whore that ANY publicity is better than NO publicity. If you have nude photos of him and a three toed sloth then maybe you have something. Otherwise, STFU!

  81. William Saturn,
Who cares if Spike was a neo-con? Right wingnuts meander to the LP a lot.
I care whether he is a spy/saboteur of the LP for Israel.
    I also care about you.
    Who in Hell ARE you?
Is there a photo of you on the interweb…anywhere?
If not, why in Hell not?
Even I have a smartphone with camera.

  82. How about giving Spike a chance as a candidate and see what he does? Pass judgment based on those actions.

  83. There’s a factual error in the NYMag story:

“Back in 1996, she was the running mate of Harry Browne, the Libertarians’ last presidential nominee before the party started running ex-Republicans like Bob Barr and Gary Johnson.”

Badnarik in 2004 was the last nominee before they started running ex-Republicans.

  84. Big whoop. You and like 6 other people on this planet will care. How about sticking your head in a blender turn it on and see what happens? That is the level of logic here. No one cares that the last time the libertarians ran their own candidate instead of a washed up Republican was 2004 or 2000 or 1996. And no one really cares about grandma shrink-professor and the joke candidate. People are focused on reality this year like getting Trump out of office and even though a lot of people would of preferred a better candidate like Sanders or Warren or even Yang, that means voting for Biden and only Biden.

Spike Cohen, libertarian? Give me a break. The neocon teamed up with anarcho-communist Vermin Supreme because they both hate libertarians. Half the troll job worked. The LP got trolled hard. But that’s OK because they sold out to Republicans 20 years ago and no one cares about them this year whatsoever.

  85. I love it how people take time out of their life to explain at length how no one cares. Obviously that’s not true as they themselves are busy demonstrating.

  86. Who cares what someone post online. Spike sounds reasonable if not a little eccentric. We don’t need to go down rabbit holes.

  87. Frankie Miller,
    Good comment!
Yes, I also noticed Vermin was more a leftist anarchist than libertarian anarchist.
Now let’s look at how maybe this sort of attack was tried 4 years earlier.
    McAfee/Weiss followed by Supreme/Cohen.
With shiksa dupe Avens O’Brien and her mom in the mix.

  88. As a progressive, I find libertarians pretty crazy. However they are a LOT less crazy than republicans. So the idea of replacing republicans with libertarians while replacing democrats with progressives, I can deal with it.

  89. Has Jorgensen done anything since winning the nomination? Is she just a paper candidate?

  90. William Saturn
The big story here is my amicus curiae brief.
And my declaration of being the de facto leader of the Green party and calling for the IMMEDIATE online nomination convention of the GP.
Spike Cohen nomination is the little story.

  91. After looking over this article I feel just like you might be my favourite writer now.
The post is a structured and well-thought one. It educated me around https://solothurnclassics.ch/preview-ash-of-gods/. Looks like the author really understand the case in point.
This piece is indeed a fantastic read. So many interesting facts I
did not understand before. Thankyou for a fantastic work.

Maintain it up from the long run!

  92. My supercomputer can run multiple processes at once but some processes are not worth running.

  93. L.P. Nominated plas ticket! There’s a female libertarian presidential candidate and a progressive left anarchist male VP. Now we just need to convince the green party to conominate and the presidency will be in our sights.

And ogle should be happy too! One female, one male, consecutively ranked with the female on top.

  94. Chuck,
Interesting. I will await for Jo to announce her PLAS campaign.
Step by step, what is her-and Spike’s next step?
I know what it should be. Does she?
