On October 16, a New York Times/Siena College Poll was released for the presidential election in Alaska. See this story. Jo Jorgensen is at 8%. She is the only presidential candidate who has campaigned in person this year (in the general election) in Alaska.

  1. There is a new scandal breaking involving Joe Biden and his son Hunter, involving explicit and compromising material left on a laptop computer in China. If more information about this comes out before the election, it could sink Joe Biden, and mean a lot more votes for Jo Jorgensen, and for Howie Hawkins in the states where he is on the ballot.

  2. Biden is innocent of any wrongdoing. There is no scandal. The Russians created that story to help reelect President Trump.

  3. Andy, that story is almost certainly based on a hoax. The reporter who wrote the story for the New York Post refused to have a byline, because he probably knows it is not the truth. Forensic testing has produced evidence that it is a hoax.

  4. I do not know all the details. I just heard about it today. I suppose we will find out more in the days and weeks to come.

  8. The story is not a hoax. The computer had photos of Hunter all over it including some of him smoking crack. The emails were from his known email address. Nobody is denying he sent them. Apparently he dropped the computer off in a drunken stupor and forget where he dropped it off.

  12. Alaska is one of those states that has been most friendly to third parties. Several elected officials have been elected from third parties or as independents or write-ins. On top of that, presidential votes have been considerable big for third party candidates (Johnson was at nearly 6% last election, and Nader was at 10% in 2000).

  15. The NY Post story was a rehash of the 2016 ‘October Surprise.’ Andy’s version above differs from the ‘official’ story in a key respect. The laptop was not found in China – it mysteriously turned up with a Trump supporter. He gave it to the FBI who analysed it and decided it was a fake.

    There is the difference with 2016. Clinton had a real issue with online security and hacked e-mails. The 2020 version did not need to be hacked – the e-mail was simply forged. Pure and simple – almost as simple in fact as anyione falling for such rubbish.

Even if it did turn up true, everyone’s that in the tank against Trump at this point is still voting for Biden. “President gearing for a 2nd term” elections in our nation’s history have always tended to be a referendum on the sitting president vs. taking a side on the guy running against him, but still, this is the most “are you for or against the president?” election ever. It’s why I think Biden is not going to have a rosy honeymoon: the coalition electing him is not a pro-Biden coalition, it’s a heavily anti-Trump one. That coalition from never Trump conservatives to DSA folks falls apart the day Biden takes office, and we’re still in the midst of large-scale problems.

    I think if you told a Democratic primary voter in 2008 before Obama picked him to be vice president that Biden would one day become president they would have laughed at you.

    As a person that’s not a Democrat at all, I think he’s probably the soundest person the party could’ve nominated for this year. Sanders the party couldn’t fathom going that left, let alone the country, and so the party ganged up on him before Super Tuesday. Buttigieg would’ve been way over his head. Warren tried to be both things to the Sanders and DLC voters and failed. Bloomberg once in a debate didn’t show. Everyone else was an also-ran that couldn’t distinguish themselves positively. That said, Biden kind of stumbled into the position as opposed to people were gung-ho about him. Iowa and New Hampshire are absolutely overrated, but he was 4th with 14% in Iowa and 5th with 8% in New Hampshire. Someone name me any other candidate in history that could’ve pulled that off.

    Biden to me is the ultimate placeholder candidate because his strongest support comes from people thanks to who he was the veep for, who is probably now an unofficial consigliere. There’s no real policy that’s super Biden-driven other than he’s probably ramping down for Covid. This is going to be a bad election for the Republicans coming up, but that’s going to be their floor as I feel the 2022 midterms are not going to be kind as Biden now gets all the blame for these problems because voters have short-term memories. Biden takes power: we still have Covid, we’re not going to have a 100% vaccine for a long time, which means travel and business will still significantly be curtailed, recession and all that jazz, plus we’re in the middle of a new Cold War with China and because the Democrats don’t like them, Russia again. The Democratic Party needs to try and figure out what their future is because the primaries seemed to make clear they’ve become the post-1988 Republicans and have fallen into the Reagan trap with Obama.

    Overall Democratic Party health to throw this regionally, I know where I live in Indiana the Democratic nominee for governor is a complete non-entity to where the Libertarian nominee Donald Rainwater is polling around 10% and has out-fundraised the Democrat and is getting ads on TV where the Democrat has decided he won’t. The Democrat will still finish 2nd due to the cities and straight-ticket voting, but I have a general theory this election is providing support for that the Democratic Party is dying in rural and small town America and are ripe for replacement for 2nd-party status. This election whatever Biden gets will be the high point for Democratic Party support. Anywhere the Democrats are under 40%, they are done as a party in that area and 3rd party supporters, whoever they are, should gear all their resources there to replacing the Democrats and being the Republicans’ main challenger. Outside of big cities, it’s becoming a dead party to me in a lot of the South, the Midwest, the Plains states, and Mountain states. Yeah, you have the cities, but that’s a lot of America right there to be throwing away the number of votes 2nd place gets.

  20. IG the reporter published the news without a byline because he felt the report was inaccurate then why publish it. Usually this argument is used by journalist or someone above him to try and give favorable arguments or question negative information on a presidential candidate that their newspaper favors, in this case Joe Biden.
