3. I think that the Republicans would have a better chance if they proposed to split NY in 2 new states: South New York for Metro NYC and Long Island, and North New York for everything else. They could offer it as a compromise if the Democrats propose again to make DC a new state

   Most New Yorkers know that such a split is highly unlikely. There are a handful of statehood supporters, but the much more popular movement is to split the state into three “autonomous regions”, each with its own government but with a weak central New York State government, that way they can still be separate politically without needing to go through the statehood process

5. I think we are entering a period of political changes. The prospect for new states is increasing, IMO. It seems to be a better remedy that either secession or endless internal chaos and dissatisfaction.
