Illinois House Passes Amendment to Change 2022 Primary from March 15 to June 28

On May 31, the Illinois House amended SB 825 to change the date of the 2022 primaries from March 15 to June 28. Now the bill must return to the Senate, because that amendment was not in the bill in April when the Senate passed it. Thanks to Ken Bush for this news.

  1. Does this have anything to do with third party or independent petition deadlines?

  2. It may not, but this site is about BALLOT ACCESS, not just ballot access for minor parties or independents, but ballot access in general, so this includes ballot access for major party candidates for primary elections.

  3. I never said it’s just about miner parties and independents. It was a simple question which you are reading a bunch of things into, which just are not there.

  4. If you don’t know whether it does or doesn’t, let someone else answer please, if anyone knows and cares to answer?

  5. The Illinois petition deadline for minor party and independent candidates is not tied to the date of the primary, so the primary date change doesn’t change the process for independent and minor party candidates. However there are many precedents that say minor party and independent candidate petition deadlines can’t be substantially earlier than the major party primaries. So if the primary date change goes through, it might be possible to get a later petition deadline for minor party and independent candidates. The deadline now is June 27, only one day before the primary.
