On June 29, a 3-judge U.S. District Court refused Alabama’s request to force the Census Bureau to immediately release data needed for redistricting. The opinion says, “The Court cannot force the Bureau to do the impossible – that is, comply with an already-lapsed deadline.” Alabama v U.S. Department of Commerce, m.d., 3:21cv-211. Here is the opinion.
The Census Bureau says the data will be available on August 16.

This post has nothing to do with postal ballots. It has to do with redistricting. The Census Bureau is late because it couldn’t get its work done the normal way because of the COVID crisis. Normally the Census Bureau hires lots of employees to go out in the field and ring doorbells of people who didn’t respond.

Washington – Split along party lines, the House launched a new investigation of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection on Wednesday, approving a special committee to probe the violent attack as police officers who were injured fighting former President Donald Trump’s supporters watched from the gallery above.
The vote to form the panel was 222-190, with Republicans objecting that majority Democrats would be in charge.
The action came after Senate Republicans blocked creation of an independent commission that would have been evenly split between the two parties.
