Federal Campaign Contribution Limits Increase Somewhat

On January 23, the Federal Election Commission announced that the new limit for an individual’s contribution to a federal candidate had increased from $2,100, to $2,300. These limits rise automatically with inflation. A contribution can be made twice during an election year, once in the primary season and once in the general election season.

  1. To paraphrase the words of the late Eugene J. McCarthy, if the FEC had been around during the times of the original American Revolution, the words of the patriots would have been: “We pledge our lives, our sacred honor, and up $4,600 per year to the cause.”

  2. “A contribution can be made twice during an election year, once in the primary season and once in the general election season.”

Not exactly. An independent candidate or a candidate of a minor party that must petition to get on the ballot has no primary (the FEC refuses to recognize the petition drive as a primary), so donors to those candidates can give the limit only once. Yes, the established parties have indeed stacked the cards in their favor in innumerable ways.
