Alabama Rep. Demetrius Newton (D-Birmingham) has introduced HB 7, providing that the state’s electoral votes should be apportioned proportionately to the popular vote in Alabama. Currently, Alabama has nine electoral votes. If this bill were enacted, and if in a future presidential election the Republican nominee received 53% of the popular vote, Democrats received 45%, and all others received 2%, then Alabama would send 5 Republican electors and 4 Democratic electors to the electoral college. Democrats control both houses of the legislature but the Governor is a Republican, so if this bill passes, it is likely to be vetoed.
Funny how this proposal is advanced only in the red states in the name of “fairness”. You would never see the Dems propose something other than winner take all in New York or California.
First they have to make sure that there is a proportional representation per electoral vote, not 627,253 persons/EV in CA and 164,594 persons/EV in WY.
