Unity08 Has No Registrants in Los Angeles or San Francisco Counties

Six months ago, Unity08 filed paperwork with the California Secretary of State, asking that elections officials tally how many people register as members of Unity08. If Unity08 can persuade 88,991 Californians to register as members by December 31, 2007, it will be a qualified party in 2008.

California elections officials are in the process of tallying up how many registered voters there are in each party (qualified or not) as of September 4, 2007. This is just an interim tally that doesn’t affect which parties will be on the 2008 ballot. And Unity08 has not yet begun asking Californians to register into Unity08. Nevertheless, one might have thought that a few people would take the initiative and register as members. However, according to elections officials in Los Angeles and San Francisco Counties, not a single person has registered with Unity08 as of September 4. Soon we will have data for all the counties of California for that September 4 tally. UPDATE: Unity08 also has no registrants in San Diego or Orange Counties, which are the most populous counties in the state after Los Angeles County. But it has 2 in Santa Barbara County.

Unity08 Has No Registrants in Los Angeles or San Francisco Counties — No Comments

  1. I am a San Francisco resident and I am “registered” to the degree that Unity ’08 has so far requested, though, I admit, not under my registered voting name. I suppose that that could have made a difference?

  2. In San Diego County I have been registered ‘Unity08’ for a few months. The county registrar has me as ‘Mis [cellaneous]’ from day one.

  3. Babette, when we comparing our membership base with state voter records your name must match. I encourage you to edit your profile at Unity08 (found after you login in the upper left corner).

  4. Richard,

I knew it was time for me for me to get glasses when I first read the headline and thought it said Unity08 had no “resturants” in LA or SF Counties. My first thought was, well neither does the AIP. Sheesh it’s tough to get old and have the old vision slip.

It was nice visiting your city briefly Sunday. Next time when I’m there longer, I’ll give you a call.

  5. Unity08 has a very long row to hoe in any aspect of California ballot access.

In 1975, I was a full-time, volunteer activist with the Committee for a Constitutional Presidency/McCarthy ’76 (and a registered voter with the Peace and Freedom Party). We failed to qulify Senator Eugene McCarthy for the 1976 California ballot via the candidate signature gathering method. (Of course, it really hurt us that the California Secretary of State, March Fong Eu, gave us our petitions after the official time for petitioning began and then would not extend our signature gathering time.)

In 1983, I was a registered voter with Rep. John Angerson’s National Unity Party. We failed to qualify the Party for the 1984 California ballot by utilizing the party signature gatering method.

In 1995, I was a registered voter with the Honorable Ross Perot’s Reform Party. We failed to qualify the Party for the 1996 California ballot via the party voter registration method. Fortunately, however, we were subsequently able to qualify the Party via the party signature gathering method.

My adivce to all Unity08 members: organize, organize, organize!
