On May 13, Mississippi held a special run-off US House election in the First District. Democrat Travis Childers appears to have won with approximately 54% of the vote. When this district voted in November 2006, the vote had been Republican 65.9%, Democratic 34.1%.
That’s the seat to which the Republican Roger Wicker was first elected in 1994, and he didn’t have very strong opposition in 2006.
Childers campaigned as a conservative Democrat. He was endorsed by Jack Reed, the 1987 Republican nominee for governor.
Childers and the Republican Greg Davis will meet again in November for the full two-year term.
It will be interesting to see if Childers can hold on to this conservative seat.
SCORE ANOTHER ONE FOR GW BUSH . WHAT A MISTAKE TO ELECT THAT MAN.
I hope the First District doesn’t turn out like the Gulf Coast district, which is more heavily Republican.
Sen. Trent Lott meddled in the 1989 special election in his home district. The Democrat Gene Taylor was elected, and he’s been in Congress ever since. In fact, he’s now the senior member of our House delegation.
