Maine Democrats Ask Maine Supreme Court to Remove Independent from Ballot

On July 17, the Maine Democratic state chairman announced that he is asking the State Supreme Court to remove Herb Hoffman from the ballot. Hoffman is an independent running for U.S. Senate. If Hoffman is removed, Maine will be one of only seven or eight states with a U.S. Senate race that has no independent or minor party candidate on the ballot. There are 33 states with U.S. Senate races this year.

Everyone agrees that Herb Hoffman’s petition was signed by more than 4,000 registered voters. Maine Democrats say he should still be removed from the ballot, because they don’t believe that some sheets correctly identify the person who was watching the signatures be gathered.

  1. Good God, these Democrats are some of the pointlessly mean motherfuckers around.

I don’t care what Hoffman stands for, I’m sending him a check. So should all of you.

  2. Sunday Night, July 20, 2008 ~~~ Charleston, S.C.

As a former Democrat now runnng for the South Carolina Legislature as a Green, I can have empathy with Herb Hoffman—who, by the way, should not be surprised by big party small mindedness. It is an established fact that the Republican and Democratic Parties are content to fight each other but loathe to allow anyone else even a tiny piece of the politcal pie.

  3. This cements the very reason why we need more candidates to run for every position from outside of the big two parties. If we challenge them everywhere the public will realize these low-blow tactics and sour on them bringing them into our camp…

  4. response to #3: some individual Members of the MGIP are working with Herb, but Herb did not win the endorsement of the MGIP, just for the record.
