Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Newspaper Editorial on Eliminating Ballot Costs for Nader

The July 29 issue of the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania daily newspaper, the Patriot-News, has this editorial. It calls for cancelling the costs that had been levied against Ralph Nader, from his 2004 petition challenge process. Nader has never paid the $81,102.19 that was charged to him, to pay for the costs incurred by the people who challenged his petition. Although the challengers have been trying for years to attach the money from Nader’s bank account, the bank is in the District of Columbia, and the D.C. courts have not been willing to permit the money to be attached. Peter Camejo already paid $20,000 to the challengers, however. Camejo had been Nader’s vice-presidential running mate in 2004.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Newspaper Editorial on Eliminating Ballot Costs for Nader — No Comments

  1. I read this in the paper this morning, and couldn’t agree more. I saw also the press conference that Nader and his attorneys had at the state capital the other day about this.

I hope Ralph is doing well in his efforts to get on the PA ballot this year!

  2. Californians, especially current decrepted burnt out pot addled Peace and Freedom Party has beens, need to coordinate with Sacramento’s Philip Sawyer on getting Nader/Gonzales on the ballot in the Once Golden State on the PFP label.

I pride myself with being usually ON TRAC with blogs, but plz be aware that there was a 5.2 trembler in east Los Angeles County. My San Diego sweetheart felt it. I did not. Corporate television [WHICH HAS NEVER EVER EVER LIED TO ME] tells me that there was minor damage and no loss of life!

    Back to your routine activities.

  3. Though Kerry won Pennsylvania over President Bush by only 144,000 votes, out of more than 5.7 million votes cast, who knows if Nader’s presence on the ballot would have made a difference or even mattered nationally, since Bush won re-election? Although Nader did garner 103,000 votes in the state as the Green Party candidate in 2000, Gore still won the state by more than 200,000 votes.

But if the “Bonusgate” allegations ultimately are proven true in court, Nader has a right to relief from an $81,102 penalty he was assessed by Commonwealth Court for alleged fraud on his nominating petitions. Those same petitions were the ones that the grand jury found the defendants’ activities were aimed at discrediting.

True or not, this also speaks to a separate issue. Pennsylvania’s standards are overly onerous for third-party candidates to gain ballot access. It’s an issue that should be included on the reform agenda.

  4. The evidence from 2004 shows that in 2004, Nader did not hurt Kerry. See the Oct. 22, 2004 Washington Post, page one, on polls which showed that the nation’s leading pollsters gave extra questions when they found a Nader voter. Also see the Jan. 1, 2005 Ballot Access News, showing that an analysis of the Nader 2004 election returns supports this conclusion.

  5. Agree with a previous post about the need to make sure Nader gets on the PFP ticket in CA. It is really disgraceful that the media (with the exception of PA) are completely ignoring the Bonusgate Scandal. This issue ought to be getting seious coverage by both mainstream and alternative media sources. Vote the scoundrels out, support Nader & Gonzalez!

  6. The corporate press, the same folks [Time, Newsweek, US News] that ignored the 2003 California Governor Gray Davis recall until Hollywood’s Der Ahnold jumped in via Nite Light…..

they have their place on the bad guys list

but Nader is stumbling, bumbling left and right!

  7. Don Lake wrote: “but Nader is stumbling, bumbling left and right!”

    Stumbling, really ?

Right now Nader is raising money at a clip that is raising the eyebrows of even his most ardent supprters. It took Nader 3 years to retire the debt from the 2004 Campaign. It is pretty clear that Nader will raise at least that much money with a potential for much more before campaigning begins in earnest in October

  8. Bob Marston: Like the CP, LP, and GP [and Nixon 1960], Nader/ Gonzales is reaching for a disasterous 50 state plan. Much better to get 35 or 40 actually on the ballot than to go for 50 and squander away half the states.

[Folks, we are talking Politics 101 here!]

With my own eyes I have personally seen Nader P2004 ‘stumble and bumble’!

My telephone and email/ DSL have not changed since I took the time and effort to get them changed for P2004! I am in contact with lots of [so called] reformers and other Nader P2004 types. NONE, NOT ONE, Has been approached by Nader’s Raiders for 2008.

I may yet become a Perot/ Perot/ Nader/ Nader/ Nader voter, but if he does not get on the California Peace and Freedom Party ballot, it will YET ANOTHER write effort in the most populated state.

And remember, if he blows it with PFP, it will take a second, independent list of federal electors to have the write in votes counted. [Ask John Dennis Coffey, my self and any one with Citizens For A Better Veterans Home[s] about the [2004] details.

Plz feel free to refute my first hand, up close and personal, observations. Google VoteNader for archives!

  9. Don Lake wrote: “Nader/ Gonzales is reaching for a disasterous 50 state plan. Much better to get 35 or 40 actually on the ballot than to go for 50 and squander away half the states.”

Nader has already said that he has the apparratus in place to be placed on the ballot of 45 States and is currently on schedule.

Don Lake wrote: “With my own eyes I have personally seen Nader P2004 ’stumble and bumble’!”

Nader did make some miscalculations in 2004 especially regarding the level of Democrat infiltration into the Greens and the amount of lawsuits the Democrats would file against him.

Don Lake wrote: “My telephone and email/ DSL have not changed since I took the time and effort to get them changed for P2004! I am in contact with lots of [so called] reformers and other Nader P2004 types. NONE, NOT ONE, Has been approached by Nader’s Raiders for 2008.”

This is exactly the attitude has stifled the growth of P&F for the last 40 years. As someone who has been registered in the Greens I was always curious why the is a large contingent of ex-P&Fers that jumped ship. After all most of them were FAR more philosophical aligned with what P&F stood for than anything the Greens professed. My inquiries of those people always netted the same response. They were sick and tired of The King-makers in the Party that wanted tribute paid to them before giving their blessing to open a race. There are just as many people as you that have worked hard on issues, thousands of them. Do you expect Nader to give them all a call ?

Don Lake wrote: “I may yet become a Perot/ Perot/ Nader/ Nader/ Nader voter, but if he does not get on the California Peace and Freedom Party ballot, it will YET ANOTHER write effort in the most populated state.”

If that happens I will register absentee, cast my vote for Nader and then organize an exodus of California Nader supporters to trek of to the nearest Battle-Ground State to work for his campaign.

Don Lake wrote: “And remember, if he blows it with PFP, it will take a second, independent list of federal electors to have the write in votes counted. [Ask John Dennis Coffey, my self and any one with Citizens For A Better Veterans Home[s] about the [2004] details.”

This is where you are wrong. At a house party last Saturday I was chatting with some very influencial people in the California Green Party. I was told the issue of Nader on the California Ballot is not a settled issue. I was told that supporters of Ralph who were very bitter about what happened in 2004 still could bring the matter of Nader’s nomination to the floor when the Green Party holds it’s convention at the end of August. The papers have yet to go in with the secretary of state.

Don Lake wrote: “Plz feel free to refute my first hand, up close and personal, observations.”

I am. And I think P&F will squander their ballot line for good if they decide to field a Crackpot Ticket when they have a candidate asking for their ballot line who get them enough votes and notoriety to blow what Ben Spock did in 72 out of the water. There are hoards of Greens that want 1 reason just 1 in order to jump ship and P&F continues with the Sectarian Strife that alienates everyone.

P&f claims that they are Socialist. When was the last time that a candidate approached them that has campaigned on in the last 3 elections, and made a cornerstone, the issue of repealing Taft-Hartley ? And now you have a candidate with the visibility and profile of Nader that wants to take it to the public ?

And you want to say no ?

Debs must be turning in his grave !

  10. Here’s a suggestion for Nader and Barr supporters. Write to Rasmussen and Gallup and ask them to include Barr and Nader in their daily tracking polls. The results of these polls are reported regularly by the major media outlets. You can reach them here:

    http://www.gallup.com/poll/contactUs.aspx

    info@rasmussenreports.com

I think Nader has a very good chance of getting the PFP ballot line. He and Matt Gonzalez will both be attending the convention. He’s participating in their debate/forum Friday night. He’s taking their nomination very seriously. With PFP’s national aspirations and Nader’s strong national running this year, I think they would be crazy not to nominate him.

(I don’t understand why McKinney would continue seeking the PFP nomination while she already has a ballot line in California. Anyone have any insight on this?)

  11. According to Mr.Winder the reason is that McKinney can still qualify for FEC primary season funds if she raised 100K in twenty states by the P&F convention. Of course even that seems unlikely and I hope that when she is out on the first ballot that she endorses Nader. In an article posted a few weeks ago here it was reported that Nader had a slight delegate lead and I hope that holds throughout all the ballots!

  12. I thought it was a different party with a later convention than the PFP that was allowing McKinney to extend her matching fund season.

I really hope the forum/debate gets recorded. I wrote to the PFP about this and according to the response I got, a local TV station and KPFA are the best hopes for getting the forum recorded; I hope it makes it onto YouTube.

I really enjoyed watching the Libertarian convention–especially the voting–on CSPAN. I was disappointed that more of the Green convention wasn’t shown. I guess we’ll just have to wait for reports of the PFP voting to come out after the fact.

    Phil Sawyer adds:

That would be very nice to see (especially if the Green Party of California ballot line is needed). It would also be somewhat ironic. The Green Party of California had the opportunity, in 2004, to pull out of the national organization and put the Nader-Camejo ticket on the California ballot. They would not do it then. Neither would the Natural Law Party nor the Peace and Freedom Party. What an astounding, collective, abdication of responsibility to the voters of California that was! In addition, whether it was true or not, it made it look like the GP, the NLP, and the PFP, were all afraid of the Democrats!

  14. Phil Sawyer wrote:”That would be very nice to see (especially if the Green Party of California ballot line is needed). It would also be somewhat ironic. You can never anticipate how these matters will shake out. I’ve been down this road to many times before. From the very moment the Greens were formed in 1992 there was this neurotic belief the Greens would be infiltrated by the Republicans to wreak mayhem. But with the exception of one incident in 2000 that never happened in any races the Greens ran in. What many of us did notice is in 98 the Democrats were the ones that started infiltrating the Greens. They laid low for a long time and even grit their teeth while holding their fire in 2000 but when it counted they unloaded in 2004. the Greens were caught absolutely flat footed. Many Greens who worked hard to form the party were seething with anger over what happened. And most hold that anger to this very day. In 2004 the California Party was caught flatfooted and was in no position to mount an insurrection to break from the national structure as the California Party had been pretty much neutralized. Where they are now organizationally is anybody’s guess. I’ve been out of party activities for the better part of 5 years amd lost a great deal of interest when Walt Sheasby passed away. My guess is if P&F passes on Nader again there will be some sort of attempt to put Nader on the Green Party Ballot. Will it be successful ? Anything is possible but my hunch is it’s very doubtful.

I am really interested in attending this meeting because I want to see exactly what the delegates are going to say about Ralph Nader and specifically what will be said against him. This is such an opportunity for P&F to build their party I really can’t see how anyone could speak against it. It isn’t as though Nader has his people ready to move in. Nader abhors political parties. If P&F does choose him there will be all sorts of Grassroot groups that will spring up to support his campaign. Those groups will remember P&F in 2 years when it comes time to vote for a statewide candidate to maintain ballot status. The California Greens have lost all of their high profile personnel. Who will they run for statewide office if their registration numbers take a beating ?

I can really see the fortunes of the Greens and P&F swap if Nader is nominated by P&F

  15. How strange, eleptical radicals Philip Sawyer and Bob Markson are so ‘out of the loop’ on some [well Documented issues, Gray Davis and John Kerry as war heroes and ethical icons any one? REPUBLICANS as agents provacateur in the Green movement?], they agree on so many points, and they are ‘spot on’ on other points!

What a fascinating West C oast Daytime Drama! I stand by my state ment [as a California ‘King Maker’ —-oh, if Bob only knew the hilarity of that remark] that Nader PERSONALLY and maybe his staff, have been a bunch of Junior Varsity minds on the campaign trail!

POINT With a simple signature, Uncle Ralph ‘does not play well with others’ could have recommended/ suggested/ endorsed local GLOBAL media darling Donna Frye WRITE IN for San Diego Mayor ! Cost /Benefit: about zero cost, possibly a great benefit to ‘team’ with the other independent write in GLOBAL phenomenom of the 2004 election! Infact, even with a similar media black out, Frye got more votes than either gray haired, dark suit, GOP grandfather. THIS WAS SOLELY AND TOTALLY RALPH’S DECISION AND FAULT!

POINT Since 1990 Uncle Ralph should have known about the wind mill peace sign.

POINT 1996, 2000, 2004, and this year his staff knows of using Naders’ Raiders, the Bull Moose, Teddy Roosevelt, TR’s California reformer running mate Hiram Johnson as campaign Icons! New York’s ‘Progressive’ label and buffalo instead of ‘Naders’ Raiders’ with a head shot of [ME, ME, ME, its all about ME] Uncle Ralph. Just plain stupid. [or at least former NYC police commissioner and Governor Teddy and a Bull Moose…]

POINT 2003 saw the over throw of corrupt insider and possible 2004 presidential candidate Gray Davis lead by angry white males. Many of whom were pro Uncle Ralph. Instead of listening to the success of the local heroes, [King Killers instead of King Makers] Naders’ law students on summer vacation gave out East Coast misinformation by the truck load. Then, when proven wrong, they got mad at the locals instead of them selves.

POINT Ralph trips over his own ego and [by extention] his own penis on a regular basis. How ever, with all this DOCUMENTED short falls, his is still probably the ethical and intellectual front runner.

This is not to say that he is SOOOOOOOO terrific but that the others are so mediocre or even [Hilary, John Insane] bad. Such a rouge’s gallery, including Cindy and Bob and Chuck and Barack!

  16. Don Lake wrote: “How strange, eleptical radicals Philip Sawyer and Bob Markson are so ‘out of the loop’ on some [well Documented issues, Gray Davis and John Kerry as war heroes and ethical icons any one?”

Care to show where I said John Kerry or Gray Davis were “war Heros” ?

I am in complete agreement with Alex Cockburn’s assessment that Kerry is actually a war criminal.

Don Lake wrote:”REPUBLICANS as agents provacateur in the Green movement?], they agree on so many points, and they are ’spot on’ on other points!”

I never advanced that idea. What I said were that many within the Greens held the view that Republicans would run stealth candidacies posing as Greens pointing out that some Greens were becoming neurotic about it. I also pointed out with the exception of one incident in 2000 no such incidents ever occurred.

Go back and reread what I wrote.

Don Lake wrote: “POINT Ralph trips over his own ego and [by extention] his own penis on a regular basis. ”

With that statement you leave no doubt where you stand on the man.

Don Lake wrote: “How ever, with all this DOCUMENTED short falls, his is still probably the ethical and intellectual front runner.”

So in one sentence you cast vile aspersions on Nader and the very next you say he is the “intellectual frontrunner” ?

This meeting ought to be good !

  17. Why is it always bout you, Bob? Sacramento Phil told me personally, over the phone, FOR YEARS that the 2003 recall was a big mistake and that Corrupt Criminal Democratic Governor Gray Governor was an apex of ethics [Oracle any one?] and a war hero!

Gray Davis was in the Journalism Corp and ‘worked it’ for his Silver Star! He was doing little more than Republicans Pete No REpete did in Viet Nam and Der Ahnold did in the tank cadet corp in Austria!

He shocked me the first time he said that Kerry was much more than a shadowy Yale Skull and Bones clone of W! As a ‘third party/ independent advocate’ he still sticks with one of the worst Democratic Party presidential hope fulls ever —in a state where the Dems were going to win all of the federal electors by over 1M votes!

Bob, it is not all about you.

Yes, Nader is a poor poor poor leader, and ‘ethical’ and ‘intelectual’ front runner, [and as I clearly said] with the rest of the pack limping behind.

Why are you confused? Like Phil [and former state employee ctweber] I find it difficult to imagine you as a college graduate, especially on a campus with [math or philosophy based] courses on ‘Logic’!

Both of you BOTH of you have arguments as ‘clear as mud’ and do not seem to understand concise detailed explanations. There is only so much that I can do.

Call me at 619.420.0209 for further chat, but if you tell me some thing stupid [REPUBLICANs infiltrating the green movement….] do not count on me to forget it once we hang up.

I hate lying scheming Dems and lying scheming GOP. Too bad Independents and alternative types are just as bad!

  18. “Nader/ Gonzales is reaching for a disasterous 50 state plan.”

So, it’s disastrous to meet the requirements for getting into the debates? Among other hurdles, N/G 08 has to have a mathematical chance of winning (enough electoral votes) to be in the freaking debates!

    Hello000!! Be gone, troll!

Exactly what did I lie about in reference to Nader (or anything else)?

Nothing and you know it. Your usual false charges applied to me, now? Now,
as before, I stick to the truth because it’s defendable without use of
inuendo and additional false statements. I suggest you try the same policy.
You’re nothing more than another person supporting the Bushites and corporate
government by attacking those actively opposing it.

You’re penny-ante complaints hardly are significant in the full scheme of
things. I note you didn’t respond at all to my actual comments, simply
repeating the nonsense of the earlier post.

You’re apparently complaining that Nader didn’t adopt other people’s views
and slogans? Okay…so what? Why should he? Nader was not ever a real
copy-cat and shouldn’t be. Your complaint on this subject is really, really dumb
    and that’s being kind.

Nader didn’t properly honor Teddy Roosevelt, the guy who lied about the
“Charge up San Juan Hill” (that was really Kettle Hill) in an operation with
little or no real military significance and where the most important thing to him
was the presence of the newspaper reporters? That Teddy Roosevelt? One of
America’s most successful political fakers? Little that he did was for any
purpose other than his own agrandizement, and practically nothing was done for
service to America, it was, in the great majority, a side affect of his
constant push for “God-hood” in the public press.

You don’t agree with some of his decisions regarding political actions and
insist you know better than he…yet he’s one of the world’s most respected
names and you’re not. He’s running for President and building a national
organization. ..and you’re not. He’s established a life long legacy of good works
which remain in place after he’s gone…and you’re not.

You’re near-incoherent ramblings defy logic. Take your medication and try
    again.

You claim to want truth…try it yourself. And if there are any lies in my
    posts, address them specifically.

  23. Nothing: You made a state ment about the bush men in the southern hemisphere. Where did you get that information —oh, you were just ‘telling stories’, ah, you were just ‘making it up as you went along’, er, you were lying!

Bush supporter, and corporate states of america supporter: out right lies!

I am in a state, Callifornia, where the Democratic candidate is going to win ALL the federal electors every four years. I can write in ‘Mickey Mouse’ or ‘Donald Duck’, go GOP for a protest vote, go Independent or alternative party [Perot, Perot, Nader, Nader, Nader?] or go along with the ‘Blue’ avalance no matter how corrupted [Bill Clinton, Joe Lieberman, John ‘Yale Skull and Bones’ Kerry (near clone of W) Hilary ‘The Peace Candidate’ Cl’inton] the Democan is that election.

I have been part of the planning and execution of an Invation Day/ Arlington West event every March. Here I have an on going failure. Many ‘right wing’ and even Bible thumping groups are not allowed to put their ANTI OCCUPATION views forth, as they do not pass the internal litmus test on UNRELATED items.

I was one of the loudest and more vocal early supporters of [supposedly Independent] threat to the banker/ lawyer/ judge/ old line San Diego establishment, ‘Surfer Girl’ Donna Frye, 2004 – 2005!

You calling me, as an Independent, Peace and Freedom candidate, reform movement activist an corporate influenced Bushite is pattenly A LIE! Plz google Don Lake [not the actor, not the lawyer] and Citizens For A Better Veterans Home……

So, again, not endorsing Ms Frye in October 2004 was a brilliant move, huh?

So associating [TR, Bull Moose] with well known, every day figures, some thing the average voter can relate to more that lame slogans, we a failures because these folks, like Franklin, Paine, Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Monroe, are not perfect!

So, again, the way a person or a team runs a campaign, primary or special or general election, is a hint, a broad, public, shout it from the roof tops HINT, of how they might mis manage in office.

‘Everyone’ whom has met the man up close [at least in 2004 in Southern California] took me aside later quietly shaking their heads with comments like ‘What was THAT all about?’ Have you met, met with, Uncle Ralph? Ever?

At a distance, a small army of pundants, yes some with their own not so hidden agenda, have long ago concluded that Uncle Ralph drives his election vehicle ‘off into a ditch’ each and every time. My first hand view of the train wreck known as California ballot snafu P2004 is my ‘exhibit A’

Can we not agree that politics is in large part public relations and communications? I have provided, item by item, detail by detail, he and his staff’s lack of grasp on those areas is grossly evident —to all but those whom do not wish to see.

So I am the enemy of the good grass roots folks? I do not think I act like it! Could you be wrong? Very wrong!

I, at length, go down the line per item. You response with broad snarkie brush strokes. Which one of us is the more disengenious? In the end, as the fascist imperial global American Empire literally ruins the planet, which one of us is wrong?

    Hi Kevin

Please see slightly amended memo (for 15) and below text (for everyone).

    Cheers,
    Toby

Subject: Memo from Nader National Ballot Access Coordinator on Building
National Presence for the Peace and Freedom Party

Michael Richardson, National Ballot Access Coordinator, Nader for President
2008, has spoken with C.T. Weber, and offered to on a pro-bono basis to help
the Peace and Freedom Party qualify in an additional 8-9 states in time for
the mid-term elections in 2010–all of which would not require large
expenditures of resources for the Party to organize.

As a note of assurance, Michael Richardson and any other Nader people that
may assist with this effort, will work with the existing core of the Peace
and Freedom Party so that Peace and Freedom Parties set up in other states
will be organically connected with the present Peace and Freedom Party, in
line with the resolution passed at the last State Central Committee meeting.

Full Details of the Memo can be obtained from Kevin Akin or ctweber.
