On October 3, the West Virginia Sierra Club endorsed Jesse Johnson for Governor of West Virginia. He is the Mountain Party nominee. The Mountain Party is West Virginia’s Green Party affiliate. As far as is known, the Sierra Club has never before endorsed any minor party nominee for an important office, anywhere in the U.S.
I believe that last statement is correct. The Sierra Club, like all mainstream environmental organizations, is closely allied with the Democratic Party and has in the past been actively hostile to the Green Party at the national level.
Congratulations to Jesse Johnson who certainly deserves this remarkable honor.
Just like the California ‘Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Union’ used to be a de facto suburbs of the state Republican Party? Since Howard’s death the organization has a reputation for being bought and sold by all commers.

Right you are David !
And this only goes to confirm my suspicion that the Green Party as it exists today is rife Operatives from the Democrat Party.
Congratulations should go to Medea Benjamin, Pat LaMarche and Lynn Serpe.
Not Jesse Johnson.
The NYC chapter of the Sierra ldid endorse Gloria Mattera (G) in her race for Brooklyn Boro President against incumbant Marty Markowitz (D) in 2005, but a Governor’s race is a whole other level.
The national Sierra Club endorsed Bill Belitskus, the Green Party candidate for U.S. House in Pennsylvania 5th Congressional District, in 1998. Congressional endorsements are made by the national Club, not state affiliates. See http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/1998/11/sierra.html for coverage.
Belitskus was the only opponent of incumbent Republican John Peterson that year. Belitskus received 15% of the vote.

This only goes to confirm that some people so blindly hate the Green Party for not “endorsing” Nader in 2004 that they will attack us no matter what we do. If we fail, it shows what a bunch of losers we are. If we succeed, it shows what a bunch of Democratic Party stooges we are.
Tom, and who initiated that predictable turn of events? Who publically stated that the P2004 Greens would skirt vunerable Democrats?
This is only to be expected, and why are you acting so surprised, no one else is…..
